Ability to Read

Does your kid knows to read the english book by his/her own when they are studying in K3?  How about his/her writing skill?

Hope other moms can share.

Should be ok wor, of course I am talking about a very simple one, kinda one picture and 1 to 2 sentances next to the picture to describe what was happening in the picture.

For instance, my son is in K2 now, he reads almost everyday. He becomes P1 this Sept and I guess his reading ability should be getting higher.

Does it means that he can recognize the spelling of the words?

Thanks for sharing your kids performance on their reading ability.

I rec'd some samples of home assignment (which was done by his classmates) from his school yesterday.  I'm so surprised that his classmates can write a lot in their journal.    However, my son can only write a little and he needs my help to complete his work.  I'm afraid that his reading ability is not up to standard.    What should I do for him in order to coach him to do better?  Thanks.

My son starts to read on his own at 3+.  He reads an hour a day at home. Read aloud each word, not scanning the pictures.  If your son does not have a habbit in reading, you can consider to read with him 15-20 minutes a day.  Choose the books to fit his level & interest.

My son is 4 next month, he does not able to write, any help or recommendation?  He is very lazy, does not like to use his hands on everything.  He has no interest in drawing and writing at all.

Thanks for your suggestion.  I have read some of your message in this website.  I think your kid is so smart under your guidance.  

My sons knows phonics.   But, he is not good enough to blend a word.   

He only likes to read story book with me (actually,  he likes to listen to me and see those pictures in the book).   We spend 15 to 30 minutes per day to read with him.  Is it too short?

你講的 journal，係要屋企做，定係學校做？

老師有冇同你講話佢進度慢？如果有，學校有冇幫佢呢？

要 improve writing，你可以試下先同佢讀一本簡單的書，然後叫佢 re-tell 個故事，如果有困難，可以用 d 問題 prompt 佢。例如，"What did the girl do then?" "Where did the wolf go later?" 。先係要佢講，然後可以寫。

我屋企書檯上，有一大疊紙，係比我 d 仔畫畫，寫字。我好鼓勵佢地寫故事，做 mini book，其實唔一定係寫滿字，可以係一 d 淨圖畫，甚至 comic 型式有字有圖。總之就任佢地亂寫亂畫。

有興趣的話，可以用 "sight words" 或 "dolch list" 係 yahoo 做一個 search，可以搵到一 d 英文常用字。

我在大女3歲半開始教她phonics, 我沒有買太多教材, 幾十張字咭全是自己弄的. 我起初每天跟她讀幾分鐘, 她在1個多月內學會. 她覺得很有趣, 主動拿著咭追著我拼讀她所識的字. 接著我會給她認一些常用字, 同步開始讀句子, 再由淺入深讀故事書.  日積月累下, 她現在K2, 可讀到小學3, 4年級的英文故事書, 但不一定全都明白.  我留意到她越會看書便越喜歡看書, 她每次到圖書館總是不願走的.

她喜歡寫字, 我鼓勵她每遇到她喜歡又看得明白的書, 便嘗試做閱讀報告, 由少至多, 她現在可寫到100字了, 兩三天完成一份. 除了present tense經常忘記加”s”, 拼錯的字越來越少, 每份約2至3個字左右. 我想她本身對看書很有興趣, 所以進步較快.

至於未夠三歲的細仔, 我今年2月中開始才認真教他.  大概這年紀的孩子記憶力好, 我亦累積了少少經驗, 他現在已可讀到10幾20句句子, 全是自己慢慢拼出來的.  不過最近他興趣轉移, 少讀了.
