Dear Logos Parents,

Attached below is a chain of self-explanatory correspondences between CUHK and me after their 2012 Information Day held on 27 October, regarding the IB English Language requirements. At first, I want to share the information with Logos parents in our PA forum which was however closed. So, I choose to post here which is the only alternative route available at this moment.

Dear Mr

With reference to your earlier enquiry about the IB English requirement, the Faculty has looked into the changes to the language subjects in Groups 1 and 2 for the IB examinations in 2013 and afterwards, and resolved that:

For applicants sitting the IB examination in 2012 and before: Applicants shall have obtained good grades in IB English at Higher Level (A1, A2 or B); or good grades in IB English at Standard Level (A1 or A2 only).

For applicants sitting the IB examination in 2013 and after:  Applicants shall have obtained good grades in IB English A at Higher or Standard Level; or good grades in IB English B at Higher Level only.

Regards

Gladys

Dear Mr

Thank you for your email.

We noted that there are some changes to the language subjects in Groups 1 and 2 for the IB examinations in 2013 and afterwards.  The Faculty will need some time to look into the changes and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Regards

Gladys

Dear Ms Chau,

Thanks for your prompt response.

My question is:-

My daughter is now studying at HKCCCU Logos Academy which offers IB curriculum.

The language subjects arranged by the school are:-

Group 1 ; Chinese Language (Standard Level)
Group 2 : English Language (Higher Level)

I understand that most of the other schools offering IB curriculum will have English Literature & Language (Standard or Higher Level) as the Group 1 language subject. I want to know whether your Faculty will not accept IB students taking English Language as Group 2 subject even though it is of Higher Level, or you need the student to take the IELTS test as a supplement qualification?

Many thanks!

Dear Mr

Greetings from the CUHK Faculty of Law .

Thank you for your visit to our Faculty during the 2012 Orientation Day last Saturday. Mr Steven Gallagher, the Assistant Dean (UG Student Affairs), has referred your enquiry about admissions to the LLB Programme Team for follow up.  To allow us better address your concerns, could you please let us know your specific enquiries?  We will then get back to you as soon as possible.

With best regards,

Gladys Chau

Hi there.

I miss the old Logos' forum too.  May I know which form is your son/daughter now?

Eng B HL should be fine to HK's Us even for those decent subjects for sure.  No worry.
Taking IELTS is also a good back up.  IGCSE is proven to be helpful for applying UK's U.

Dear Logo parents,

Attached please find the reply from HKU Faculty of Law to my recent enquiry on the minimum English language requirements. Please note that they will not accept English Language B even for Higher Level. They did not mention whether IELTS will be considered as supplementary qualification.

For your further information, please note that, from 2013 onwards, there is no more A2 syllabus.

I wonder did our first batch of IB candidates face the same restriction when they apply for the HKU Law Faculty.

Dear Mr ,

Your email dated May 21, 2013 refers.

For language subjects in IB Diploma, we consider Higher or Standard Level in A1 or A2 syllabus.

Yours sincerely,

Thanks for your information.   As per the HKU's introductory talk held last year in school, some parents did ask the same (similar) questions and the representative of HKU replied that HKU accept Eng B HL.  It seems that the written reply from the HKU's Law fac held differently.

As per my understanding, in the first IB batch, there is no student apply those "神科" like LLB or MBBS and therefore the ENG B HL is not a hurdle.  In fact, almost all LA's applicants who apply for HK's big 3 receive their offers. pm me for further discussion if you like.

As far as I understand, what students learn in Eng A and Eng B are different.  For law that requires high Eng proficiency and critical skill, Eng A would be more appropriate to its needs.

The min requirement of UST (which does not offer law) is 4 for Eng A or 6 for Eng B.  I think this in a way tells the difference between A and B.

Yes, at least UST treats ENG B a proper way although with a tougher requirement.  HKU Law Fac in this way even doesn't consider ENG B even a HL7 is bit too far.  Thanks BB144 for the sharing and the new comers should take it into account.

Group 1 : Chinese Language – Higher Level

Group 2 : English Language – Standard Level

Group 1 : Chinese Language AStandard Level

Group 2 : English Language BHigher Level

Standard Level.

Class 2 IB School.

2009年和2010年是 Group 2 – English Language (Standard Level) ,沒有提及是 A2 or B。

English A for LA is much more mportant than Spanish.....
Also, English A  shows students English proficiency more than program selection strategy.

Well said, parents need to identify the weakness of the school and improve those weaknesses with the school.

Is Spanish a Group 1 or Group 2 subject? If Group 2, students will be taking Chinese plus Spanish.  I was wondering how this combination would affect universities applications.

Music Composition and Production‧

http://www.logosacademy.edu.hk/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/201213_DS390_Elective-Subjects-for-2013-14-DS4.pdf
