singapore international school

Any parents who could comment on SIS's teaching standard of Mandarin ?  Is the standard equivalent to that of local school, e.g ability to write & read ?

Since the Mandarin is in simplified characters, any problems encountered in daily life, e.g. reading the menu, newspaper. Can SIS parents share their experience with us.

Re: singapore international school

SIS's strenghth  is Putonghua and not written Chinese.  SIS employs Mainlanders teaching Chinese and teachers have very good accent. SIS students learn PinYin in Primary 1 so that they could learn the pronunciation of Chinese words on their own. On average, students have 1.5 hour Chinese lesson everyday and the rest of the lessons are in English.   I must admit that the standard of written Chinese may not be as high as other local schools because some of the students are not Chinese.

I attended the musical night in SIS several weeks ago and there was a Chinese drama performed by P4 students. The students spoke very good Putonghua and they even became the marshall of the show.

Simplified Chinese characters was one of my major considerations when I was considering sending my son to SIS. It is interesting to know that the majority of Chinese population in the world uses simplified Chinese characters nowadays. If I am not wrong, only Taiwan and HK still stick to
traditional Chinese characters. The Metro News distributed in MTR stations also has one page of news in Simplified Chinese characters. Shall we go
with the Joneses?? In fact, my son is comfortable with both and he seldom mixes them up.

Re: singapore international school

Bristol, thank you for your valuable comments.

What's your view if the children learn both simplified & traditional chinese characters at the same time ?  Any problems to be encountered ?

Since SIS does not have secondary school, your son may have to study in another international school after Primary 5 or Primary 6 which may offer few lesson in Mandarin, do you have any plan for your son to continue the study of Chinese, e.g private lesson, etc.

My family is considering to send our daughter to SIS preparatory class.  do you have any comments on their teachers, teaching methodology ?

Since I still have some questions about SIS, can we contact via e-mail ?

Re: singapore international school

My son studied in SIS since he was 4yrs. He is now studying in P3. His Mandarin is excellent although our family speaks in Cantonese.
For the written simplied Chinese, I don't think it is a problem. Besides, he takes Kumon Chinese and we read Chinese Bible every night.
He doesn't have any problem in reading Traditional Chinese. Of course, he could have difficulties at writing instead.
For Secondary school, it is now my concern. Most SIS students switch to other Internationl school in P5 or P4, if they plan to study in Int' Secondary continously.

Re: singapore international school

My son does not have any problem reading both traditional & simplified Chinese characters. In fact, he knows more words than I expect because he reads a lot of books borrowed from local libraries. As he uses simplified Chinese characters in school, I do not expect he knows writing a lot of traditional characters.

Some of my friends sent their kids to other international schools and give their kids Chinese tuition. However, their kids could not learn much at all. The result is just like Chinese learning French or Latin for leisure.

SIS conducts its P1 admission test in Mandarin or English. One of my friends' kid failed the P1 admission test a few years ago. Some parents told me that it is easier to get into the preparatory school and be promoted to primary school. The teachers in preparatory years are native Putonghua & English speakers. Perhaps, you pay $60K a year for the bilingual environment. Kids can learn languages very fast.

You can PM me if you have any more questions.

Re: singapore international school

03baby,

here are some of my concerns:
- teaching approach
- character building of the child
- simplified chinese characters
- return to local school
- etc.

Re: speak sing-lish in school, you can refer another topic on "parents from singapore int'l school" for details.

Any other parents from SIS can share their view why they choose SIS instead of other int'l school?

Re: singapore international school

Hello
My daughter is 3 years old.  I consider to send her to singerpore internation school, but it is so far from my home and the school operates from 1150 - 1500 at preparatory year 1 that is not good for my daughter.  Therefore, I want her to enroll preparator year 2 when she is five years old.

I have some questions as follow:

Is it easier  to get into preparatory year 1 than preparatory year 2?

Is it quite difficult to get into preparatory year 2?

Is fluent english the important factor for admission in  preparatory year 2?

What should I prepare for my daughter before interview?  Should I arrange more English lessons for her?

Can I stay with her during interview?

I really hope to give her the best education.

Thanks for your help!

Re: singapore international school

I think it's easier to enter into PY1 rather than PY2 because more places of PY1 are offered.

If you choose the interview to be conducted in English, I think the ability to understand English is very important and the kids give some response to what the teacher asked. The parents are requested not to stay together with the kids during the interview.

Re: singapore international school

Dear Chanms,

My daughter also studies in SIS P3.  My case is quite similar to yours.  My daughter entered in PY1 and could speak very good mandarin after studying one year.  I think their teaching method is quite good (one day english and one day mandarin for PY classes).  I find out small children are genius in learning languages. They are very easy to communicate both in english and mandarin with their classmates and teachers.

We speak Cantonese at home, we found out the volcabularies for my child is not enough.  Can anyone share how to increase her volca.? (I mean keep her in foreigh speaking standard).

What's your planning for your son's secondary continously?

Re: singapore international school

My child stuies in SIS at the 5th years, most of her english teachers are foreigners and mandarin teachers are from mainland china and taiwan. They speak quite native.  But still, it's singapore school, sometimes I can hear my child pronounces the word "thing" as "ding".  Others are OK.

Re: singapore international school

For English vocab, we use Disney channel.

For Secondary school, you may have 2 choices.
If you want to study an international secondary school, please apply it right now, and make the transfer around P4 or P5.
I want my son to study in a local school. So, I may make some applications to private schools. It's really a big trouble.

Re: singapore international school

Dear Chanms,

Thanks a lot for your information.  BTW, where can I find the Disney chanel?

It's a good news to you that the Hong Kong Government cancelled the external examination for primary school.  International students have more chance to be accepted by traditional famous local secondary schools.

Good luck to you.

Re: singapore international school

How's the teachers' and principal attitude towards students?  Are they open and kind?
