They usually do projects in groups, I don't find the kids need a lot of parents' help, but sometimes if you are in a lazy group you tend to find your daughter doing most of the work. (I consider this a good learning experience.)
I believe all sub. schools follow government's syllabus, so they will have limited say in the text books. But I think they have a say in the tests' level. I find the text books they chose are not difficult, and the tests are reasonable. Because of the need to get within the upper band of test results in order to get to secondary school, you really need to get As ( I think at least A-) in most major subjects. That's why there is a pressure for the students to work their heads off and give up alot of free time. I think you just have to find a balance.
Chinese is relatively more difficult, that's why most kids are getting help elsewhere, as I don't find they are doing the teaching job very well here. I heard most students find Chinese a great stumbling block in the transition from primary to secondary.
I think if the girl has a good memory, and the parents are watching closely enough, with good time management, you can still have a normal afterschool life and weekends. Of course you have to give up most of the play time at weekends before the tests.
The foundation years (P1 -3 ) are important particularly in Maths and Chinese. If you make good use of winter and summer holidays you can easily stay ahead of most and have an easy school life.
As for English, the level is lower than I expected, but I heard still considered to be better than most schools. (except the top schools). Mostly due to the teachers of this generation, I think most schools have this problem in HK.
On the whole, the school is like a support system, you cannot reply on it completely . You will find the good students here are actually getting most of the support from their parents.

thanks, ketchupbaba. i hv heard that many schools require kids to do "projects," and many of these projects are often beyond the understanding and ability of the students - therefore, leading to a lo ... |
