My kid is offered a place in SIS in the coming sept.
I heard some of my friends saying that the Eng standard is very high in this school and the teachers are demaning and strict. Of course it is good on one hand, but on the other hand, I am a bit worried because my kid is only in p.1 level and goes into a new environment. As a working mum, I also cannot accompany him to the school and support him, do you think that it is easy for a new comer to tune in? Will the teacher show him how to go to the caneen to have lunch? is the atmosphere of the school warm enough to let the child relax and learn?
It is really... how to say? As a mum, I think you will understand We hope the school with high standard, at the same time, we also hope that our child can study happily.
Please share your experiences. Thank you in advance.

as far as i know, you have no need to be worried. A lot of my colleguaes send their kids to international school. some go to efs, some go to sis, etc. myimpression is that all the sch has their own characteristics. efs emphasis on reading n the children is strong in eng but weak in chin ( in general).they pay less attention to discipline. It does not imply that they are bad. actually, it only reflect the phiolosophy and culture behind is different.
Sis has strong curriculum and emphasis on disclipine. The adv is that you can be more comfortable n enjoy the spare time u stay with your child. boz the school has already played a role in the moral edu.
Therefore, just look at the good side , u will be more easy to face the anxiety that the changes brings. In fact, it is true and the point is that whether you can fully utilize the good side of that school or not.

Thanks for your sharing.
Actually,Ii have rang up the sch office and talk to the teacher-in-charge. Luckily, the feeling is so good. They explained to me how they guide and teach the students. I must admit that they are really professional and patient. As you mentioned, emphasizing on discipline is good to the children.They will be well-behaved and establish good habits towards learning as well as during the daily life. Nowadays, too many children are spoiled.One more thing - i think it's important - I discovered that the lady whom I talked to has no singlish accent at all, 100% noble english, oxford accent.Haha......
Whenever you are in doubt, try to find the way out. I am confident that my choice is correct after contacting the school. Anyway, I still sincerely thank you for your advice and quick response at the moment I am confused.Thank you very much!

Nice to know that you are confident with the school after contacting them. You will find out more and more happy things from your child after he goes to the school, like field trip, family day, SHIP programme....I am happy with the school too.

My child was promoted to P1 from PY, most of her classmates in P1 were the same class as PY2, they knew each other already and would like to play together. The reason is the school wants them to get use to P1 life easily when all the classmates are the same. For your case (if your child is not studying in PY), you can encourage your child to play/follow with his classmate to the canteen for recess or lunch, to library, to plaza...it's very easy to children to play together. Share with him that his classmates will play very close as they are the same classmate for the last two years. If you have time, you canbe the lunch mother or swimming mother. For academy, you don't have to worry as they only have one exam at the end of the year. All the dications and tests will not show in the report. You have more time to get use to the system of SIS. As a result, please cooperate with the school that encourage your child to read as many as books. My child read over 200 books(small) in P1 but read much fewer this year as the homework are really very difficult and need more time to finish. P1 & P2 are the honey moon period for your child. You can also choose a CCA for him, some need fees(a few thousand per term) but if the child is selected by the school, free of charge, like my child, she is a member of Chinese dance from PY2. They win the competition this year, if you are interest, you can buy a ticket to see their performance in April 15, 2005 starting from 7:15 at Shatin Town Hall. For lunch and recess time, you need to buy lunch coupons and snack coupons for your son and need to write the name on it in case lose it. The canteen will give you the order form and food details for everyday beforehand.

Thank you for your sharing. It's nice to know the parents of SIS here.

I would like to know which year will they start the swimming lesson? My child is studying in starters international school. Therefore, he can speak English fluently but he knows nothing about Manadrin. Do you think that it is a problem? Will the school realloocate the classmates every year after P1?

One of my friend wants to know somthing about PY class. He wants to send her daughter to PY Class. Would you please describe what they will learn , how many student in one class, will they also have CCA in this early stage?

Me too, nice to know you!

Swimming lesson starts from P1. Most of them know how to swim in P2 (some will learn in summer). For Mandarin, I believe children can learn very fast. Although you son didn't know any about mandarin, if he is willing to learn, I think he will catch up very fast. Of course, as he already speaks English very fluently that he has a trend to love Engish but deny manadarin. Some of my child's classmates are excellent in English but don't like Manadrin that their chinese level will be a little lower. Dont' worry, P1 & P2 is a period for them to catch up. Some even graduage in local kinder will perform top in the form. One of my child's P1 classmates, he was graduate in Kau Yan kinder and study P1 in SIS, he is top in the form. Of course, he is a smart boy and willing to learn very much, he reads a lot of books. My child told me that the boy knew 9 planets in english and my child knew 9 planets in chinese when they were in P1. Therefore, no matter which kinder can study well just depends only the children themselves.

For SIS PY, they will have one whole day in English and another whole day in Mandarin. Before class, they will sing together with 5-6 classes, each class less than 25 pupils, ten of them will be selected to sing in front of others everyday in order to train their confidences. After one year, they can speak quite well in mandarin. For english standard, I think it's quite depends on their mother tongue. For PY2, the teachers will teach them "Hon Yu Ping Ying?", they should be willing to read a book with "Hon Yu Ping Ying?" at the end of PY2 and read simple english book. They don't have much chinese homework in PY but have homework in P1 almost everyday.

I have bought the ticket in shatin Town hall on April 15. Will your go with your kid also?
I have met 4 classmates of my boy in sis. They come from Victoria, Cdnis, st stephen (park road)and efs Kindergarten. Therefore, I encourage him to make friends with them. It's lucky to have some friends before the term begins.

Dear Crystal,

I think I can check tonight to see whether we have the uniform (old style). As my daughter is very slim although she is in P3, please let me know how tall is your friend's daughter(___cm). However, for the PE uniform, your friend can buy them in Kingcow (Sheung Wan and Hang Fa Chuen branch).
