有冇家長會好似我咁,出年帶小朋友去英國讀書?暫不打算寄宿,希望陪他一年。

I did the same thing last year.  My son starts boarding this year.  A good transitional time!

my son is going to take exams for year 10 in 2014.  If he passes, I plan to go and stay with him in Uk for first few months. But I would still put him in boarding (maybe weekly) as he will be quite big (14.5 years old) by the time and I want him to learn independence and adapt to boarding school life quickly.

Ic! my friend encountered the same problem. But since I only plan to go once in Aug and stay till Xmas, then I will let my son stay there and fly back and forth UK and HK alone, so I guess it's not the same? I remember you said you now stay there and your daughter is attending day school? So, you have quitted your job? and, how come you do the school interview so late in March? still 趕得切?

I always thought the point of studying abroad is to learn to be independent.  I don't see how having parents there is a beneficial thing.

I agree with you. Independence training is one of my reasons of sending my kid abroad. Therefore I just plan to stay there for few months for transition and adaptation, and I would still put him in boarding during those few months.
But I think maybe some parents send their kids to schools abroad only for the different academic environment, culture, etc and therefore day school would serve their purposes well ?

Looking back at my own experience, I quite enjoyed having no transitional help.  It actually makes the transition easier since kids will learn that there is nothing to fall back on and they will have to make things work themselves.  Imagine a weekend with not much homework or work to do.  Spending time with parents mean not spending time trying to make friends or playing a sport with friends.
