International primary student looking for local secondary school

My daughter is going up to year 7 (secondary year one) in 2011-2012.  She's currently studying in international primary school and I am planning to put her in local secondary school in 2011.  

1)  Any one has experience with this critical change?

2) Which schools in HK sides are using :

  a) 'Mandarin' as the medium of instruction for
      all Chinese subjects, and,

  b) 'English' as the medium for all other subjects

I badly need all your valuable advice.

In HK side, you can try HKUGA College. As my understanding, this is the one with a similiar style in international school.

Of course, I cannot say if it is a good school (I got both good & bad comments regarding this school). But it should be the one for the case like you who will transfer from international school to local school.

FYI - this is a DSS that you need to pay the school fee about HK$35k in a year.

I think that CFSS is a good choice for your kid. The school's  acamdic results of both HKCEE and HKAL is promising.:) :) which give us confidence. The school life is both fruitful and enjoyable. She will provide positive value to our kids.

BTW, What is the reason of your kid changing from a international school to local secondary school? It seems that most of the parents like kids studying in international school for better english and happier life.

我姪仔就有呢個經歷(大約14年前), 小學時讀international school, 中學時無啦啦要轉番傳統中學, 理由係阿哥覺得九年免費教育係佢應得既. 結果當然好難搵中學, 最後得北角蘇浙收. 一路都冇學壞, 會考14分, 去英國讀兩年考完A-level,入咗Imperial, 依家讀完博士. 當然你未必要搵蘇浙, 不過我覺得一般band2直資都可以考慮.

我女係hkuga小學學生
每年都有d傳統/國際學校學生選擇hkugac, 由於有一條龍小學關係, open for application既位唔算多, 外來生都要band one or至少band two頭+其他良好表現(bk 8返黎)
hkugac係用project approach的, 國際學校學生都易適應d, 不過中文方面就要落d功夫了
由於係新校, 而家未有公開試成績睇, 唯一近期睇到就係呢樣:
"校方(港大同學會書院)去年又安排中三學生報考IGCSE英文科, 九成五學生達C級或以上成績"

Hi,

You could try Pui Kiu College in Tai Wai.
2 classmates of my child are from international school.  They seem enjoy to study in this school.  Their Chinese is not good as other Chinese students, and school arranges a special lesson in Chinese and Chinese History for them & other students in the similar case.  I think that you could check with the school for more details of how they support this kind of students.

小兒由新加坡國際升到賽馬會體藝中學，9月讀F.4。

情緒/心態上需要很大的調整。如果孩子知道點解要行呢條路，他們要克服到。

選校方面：直資較易收國際學校學生, 如家長們提及的直資學校。要視乎該校有無試過收國際學校學生，要perference的話，家長/校長都會放心一點。

有些存統名校如庇理羅士都會收新加坡學校畢業的學生。當然視乎成績。

最好問問自己小學的師兄師姐，看看有無升學到local school。

The following are the reason why I plan to have my daughter changing to local school:

1) Financial problem is the first issue
2) I thought but not sure that one who is in good command of Chinese would have a better chance in admitting universities in HK.
3) Chinese is getting more and more important nowaday

I am very confused as someone told me that :

1) international secondary school student would have a better chance in admitting universities in HK since most of them opt for oversea studies.

2) if my daugher continues her education in international secondary school.  Her Chinese standard would disable her in getting a place in universities in HK

Any comment?

似乎唔係wor, 人地去外國, 關你o係香港升咩事? 似乎2樣無直接關係lor, instead, is唔係經jupas入, 而for non-jupas application既位唔多就真

無關係tim啦, 讀傳統學校考a-level, 大把學生無修中文, 而且以我讀本地大學經驗, 讀足3年根本一個中文字都唔駛寫!

1) 會唔會樓主意思係: HKo既U會有預留小部份學額for IB 學生, 咁大部份 international school 學生都去外國, 咁就好似competitors 就會少咗。

2) 我地一般 local secondary school 學生好似係中英文數都要有school cert及格(定係credit?) + 3A-level 先會有入大學資格 i或者係有把握入到熱門學科 (我唔記得啦, 當年 school cert 我係全部都有credit). 最新334學制都好似有D類似要求, (see below)

但樓主, IB 課程應該同 local school 要求不一樣, 你唔好撈亂晒, confuse 你自己呀!

而家香港考大學主要係經聯招(jupas), 只有好少(唔知有幾少)既位係for non-jupas(係有學額for non-jupas, 無學額會特別留俾ib學生), 包括全港唔係考a level(以後無左al就係中學文憑試)既學生, 同埋全世界有興趣黎香港讀書既學生
而我地偉大祖國都幾多尖子架! 所以non-jupas競爭都唔野小呢!(將來制度點改就唔知了)

Currently, Non-JUPAS is about 20-30% (& rising) depending on which U you are talking about.

祖國發展宏大, 中文在社會越發重要, 但這並不會是大學取生的主因, 如果–個生活在香港的外國人, 那麼就不用上大學嚕? 大學取決在於學生成績, 如無中文, 會考慮其他language學科或其他學科代替.

我公司都垧有一個讀國際學校, 唔識中及, 但都考入HK U.  佢成績好, 只要成績好, 無論有無中文, local 或 oversea 的 U 都一定收.  成績唔好就那裹都不用去了!

在大學除非你讀同中文有關的subjects, 否則英文才最重的.

以我經駭,考AL的, 高GCE AL 必高2級. 有 case  高考光頭,考 GCE 全 A. 入到英國名校.

是不是不報高考, 報GCE, 和"國際"學校學生fight non-jupas學位, 反而有利呢?

As per my experience, Judy is right, though the case quoted by her is a bit extreme.
Actually I am planning to let my kids to take IGCSE at F4 Nov & GCE AL at F6 Jan.  I hope that they can get good results to safeguard their entry into good U

I studied in UK for Bachelor and postgraduate based on HKAL results. Most universities in UK like HK students as we afford to pay overseas fee, if results are similar they may take HK or overseas students.

英國名校 - which universities you refer to???? For my definition is Oxford, Cambridge, Durham, Warwick, St. Andrew, LSE, ICL ..... top notch universities. Others are 2nd to 3rd tiers.......

Declare of my personal interest, I studied in 2nd tier universities only.

我讀書年代, C變A是正常現象, 但這麼多年來, 英國奪A通账得利害. 奪A之百分比和香港C以上的差不多, 加上香港教得較深, 現在我認為D變A都正常, 不知同意否?
