Hong Kong International Schools Say They May Not Survive Health Crisis

Hong Kong’s international schools are bracing for an exodus of families from the city, with some warning they may have to shut for good after the government suspended classes to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

The schools’ concerns were relayed to Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam in a Feb. 12 letter from the French and British chambers of commerce.

“If the specific needs of international schools cannot be rapidly addressed, this will very likely trigger decisions of families (not just expatriates) to leave Hong Kong in the coming weeks,” wrote Rebecca Silli and Peter Burnett, chairs of the French and British chambers. “This would also have dramatic consequences on the international schools’ financial position, even to the point of putting at risk the continued operation of some.”

The chambers called on Lam’s government to improve communication with international schools during the crisis. They warned that if schools can’t get clarity soon on whether they’ll be able to reopen in March,or host exams scheduled for April-June, the entire school year may be jeopardized and prompt a “significant number” of families to leave.

Does that mean the international schools prefer to resume school ASAP?

My kid has yet reached school age, but if he is, I am quite worried about his classmates from PRC (you know, there must be at least a few around).Not to mention there is already local spread and the prevalent shortage of face masks.

Personally, I would prefer the school suspension to last longer even at the expense of the viability of the IS.When cNoV-2019 is over and hk’s economy picks up, the under-subscription problem would be gone.

I however reckon that, for students in years 10 onward, the school suspension definitely affects the students’ preparation for public exam.On the other hand, I am seeing the IS are generally doing a great job in home learning through technology.Hope those public exam years students are ok!

教育局局長楊潤雄前日宣布，將全港學校的復課日期延至不早於3月16日。《蘋果日報》報道，有在港外國社群擔心措施影響子女升學前景，而感強烈不滿，楊潤雄昨日與國際學校代表會面，容許學校可為即將參加公開試的學生進行「必須的小組學習」，回校人數等亦由校方決定，即變相容許國際學校復課。

教育局回覆該報查詢時稱，楊潤雄在昨日與包括國際學校代表在內的60多名舉辦非本地課程的代表會面，解釋教育局就學校停課安排及回應其查詢。發言人解釋，由於國際學校的部分畢業班當未完成授課，且有部分公開考試的校本評核尚未完成，故局方對校方、家長及學生的訴求表示理解，亦願意作出應變措施。對於校方可自行決定回校人數，發言人就指是因為每間學校情況有所不同，相信校方可平衡學生升學和防疫的需要。

教育界立法會議員葉建源向該報表示，教育局所提出的原因在本港所有學校都通用，質疑決定會否破壞防疫措施。葉建源又認為決定是完全不能接受，是對其他學校的歧視對待。

主要針對今年IB個班，佢地做不到課堂studies and projects係不能fulfil criteria 畢業, 外國考試局和大學亦不會酌情就你香港。反而A level 和DSE還可以靠網上學習。
其他年班的就巳預左一起停課，一般網上學習巳上軌道。

聽過有問過IBO, 不会延遲5月考試，有家長話如學生未達 teaching hours 要求，不能参加公開試

教育局已經提出基於實際情況，有限度提前復課的許可在本港所有學校都通用，不明白葉建源議員為何會認為這是對其他學校歧視。

上年因為社會運動已經停課一點時間，下半年又疫情。今年的IB考生真係好大困難

人生就系咁，希望佢哋經過困難，將來更能跨過任何障礙。我女就系IB畢業班。

你在哪裡打聽的呢？資料不正確。現在online teaching 用zoom.功課照交。TOk照做，點會唔satisfy 個要求？依家所有IA都交曬。仲有，我女都系IB畢業班，如果只系IS可有限度復課，其他學校不可以，系唔公平喎。教育局話佢覺得本地學校考mock 唔緊要，我見唔到佢話一視同仁，有議員提出好正常，點解話刷存在感？
感覺你覺得IS學優愈d.一切變得理所當然

現在學校視像教學仲辛苦過返學 每日8am -3pm except recess & lunch 要比老師見到你真人坐喺度實時communicate.  Year 9 都咁 intensive

越嚟越多人選擇IS,應該捱得住，大把人爭住讀，不過可能會師資流失。感染不會是永遠的， 最多幾個月，如果長期，便會變成風土病大家都會習以為常。就會復課。

原來囡囡已經係畢業班，加油！有時覺得，之前香港小朋友太幸福，今次真係一個歷練！

Yes, the hk gov lacks communication with all stakeholders of the society.  

The management of this crisis is really the worst.
