That's not how the random number works. Applicants are first sorted by their priority group, and then by the random number they have drawn, so the number is only used for prioritizing within a particular group.
Siblings have priority over ESF kindergarten pupils, and ESF kindergarten pupils have priority over general applicants. So for example, a kindergarten pupil with number 10 would come before another kindergarten pupil with number 50, but would be behind a sibling with number 100.
It means that unless I know the total no. of applicants with higher priority than me, otherwise even I know my random no. from school, it can't tell exactly wherre am I in the queue? Will it be more clear about my position after the result has been released? So the school could tell me how many students are actually ahead of me?

Yes, just knowing the random number means very little, it is only meaningful within the same priority group, so if your child gets allocated a bad number, he/she is behind others in the same group, but still ahead of all the children in the lower priority groups.
Yes I have got an interview as most of the exitsting ESF kindie students did but some of us are on the reserve list. The VP has told us explicitly that if the no. Is around 150-160ish then probably ok, if it's 190+ then probably need to look at other schools.
That's not correct. The priorities are assigned during application stage. That's why most ESF kids get an interview and other kids from other kindies have less a chance. Like I said the VP had explained that the school offered 150 places, they would interview 200 kids, around 10 maybe has NR, then down the line places would be given to those with siblings (that's why their interview letter doesnt state they are on a reserve list). Then all the others who got an interview has a random no. And you can do the sums yourself. Even 10% for some reasons dont pass the interviews or not taking the offer. My no. 190 is not looking good. But then who knows....

That's what I mean, ESF kindergarten children are in a higher priority group than general applicants from other non-ESF kindergartens, so an ESF kindergarten child could have a bad number but is still in front of a general applicant with a good number.
Of course, a general applicant with a bad number is the worst case.
想當年副校長見了我同我太太只是5mins,
佢問我個小朋友優點同決點,係屋企同Holiday鍾意做乜,其實見副校just a causal talk only not a interview at all.
至於小朋友in 乜,其實you dont need to prepare and you also cant preapre, just tell your kids relax and enjoy the class, no need to tell them it is a interview. All kids must love the interview section...dont worry.
