My son got offer from both JIS and Afield but different level (he is born in Nov)

Any advice which one to choose?

JIS I presume is Japanese International School. Are you or your hubby from Japan?

If you value Chinese more, Anfield will be better. Cos Chinese consider as 2nd language in Anfield. For JIS, even they have Chinese, I believe it would be 3rd language, which will have less focus in it.

However, if you or your Husband is from Japan, that’s different story.

I would choose JIS if I had an offer, just personal choice. great facilities!

may I ask if you are at JIS reception or have sibling priority? they have so few places! we didn't even get an interview.

I’ve been to the school tour of JIS, their students have the option of choosing Chinese or Japanese as the second language, it’s taught in traditional characters, not a bad choice for a local kid.Both schools are good and caring, JIS has an even smaller class and a better cultural mix (from what I observe in 5/2017). One thing to consider is the year of entry for secondary school or insertion at other schools - some schools like ESF have their cut-offs at December, so if your kid wish to transfer to ESF, he/she has to “jump class”. For ICHK I am not sure if they have an age cut-off for entry.

JIS可選中文或日文做2nd language，native 組教繁中程度頗高(不過我相信呢點樓主一早知)…我會考慮以下幾點…

Anfield: English national curriculum. Mostly local students (including Cantonese, longtime Indian HK residents, Mainlanders) and a small number of other nationalities. Religious background. Better schoolbus network (but compulsory busing policy).

JIS: IB. More diverse student body. Bigger campus with swimming pool. Small and intimate school community. Shorter school hours.

Thanks! JIS is indeed a very ideal choice. The only struggling is to hold back for a year, in which I can’t see a reason why...

I don’t think it is a problem to skip year 6 and join year 7 in Esf school. Moreover, it seems only Esf use 31 Dec as cut off now, most of the other IS cut off with 31 Aug.

ESF seems a bit more flexible with the birthday cutoff at upper primary and secondary. Know of Dec-born kid (moved in from UK) who got ESF permission to enter 1 grade lower, so that he didn't have to miss one whole year of school. That happened a few years ago though...
