International primary school -> local high school?

Anyone tried or think of sending their kid to international primary school to build up a strong English foundation, and then send them to local high school to strengthen their Chinese and Math skills?

Re: International primary school -> local high school?

it could be difficult for the kid to catch up on the Chinese subjects in local curriculum.

Re: International primary school -> local high school?

thanks for both mom's response.

there must be some difficulties switching from one system to another.  but the pro is that the kid can have strong English and Chinese skills.

I don't know if it's gonna work this way, but what I have in mind is:

English kindy and primary
Chinese secondary grade 7-10
overseas grade 11-12 and university+

It won't work.  Chinese is more difficult that English, so the kid cannot catch up in secondary.  It should best be bilingual all the way uptil secondary.

Re: International primary school -> local high school?

It will be too difficult for the child to catch up on the subjects taught and written in Chinese, unless he/she takes private lessons on Chinese languages and subjects from kindergarten all the way up to secondary level.

Re: International primary school -> local high school?

Hi sophia 1201,

I have exactly the same idea in mind i.e. international kindy + primary for a good language foundation and then local secondary to strengthen science/math skills.  I have been thinking of whether this works but from other mom's responses, it seems difficult.  What about if we send our kids to Chinese International School or Singapore International School?  I have heard that their Chinese is quite strong too.  Can any mom comment on this?  Thanks!

Re: International primary school -> local high school?

I only know that most international schools teach Chinese in Mandarin, using simplified Chinese, so cannot catch up with local schools which use traditional Chinese.  So quite a headache to find an international school with good Chinese teaching.

Re: International primary school -> local high school?

How about the ESF new school at Ma On Shan? It's a 一條龍 school for students from 5 yrs to 18 yrs. So called the "優質私校." English language will be the main medium for teaching and learning as with all schools in the ESF family, but also specialise in teaching Chinese (both standard Chinese and Putonghua). Sounds quite nice for parents who want their kids to learn both eng and chinese. You can check details at http://pis.esf.edu.hk  Also the IB system sounds good.
