如何學會兩文三語

香港做為國際大都市，中英兩文三語的重要性不言而喻。但要做到真是困難重重。

每個父母對子女的要求不同。我本人希望他們英文為第一語言， 但中文要達到讀演義小說的程度。我大兒子他小學讀中文小學。小學畢業轉讀國際學校。盡管很幸運他基本上能達到上面的要求， 但個中辛苦真是冷暖自知。

我開始這個題目， 不過想拋磚引玉。希望大家能找到一條較自然的方法，學會兩文三語。

A natural way to be bilingual : have a western dad and a chinese mom!

So which type of school is your younger kid studying? Have your elder son finished secondary school and has he taken IBD?  Hope you can share some of your experience in helping your son to be bilingually proficient after changing to an international secondary school.  Thanks a lot.

我所見到，父母希望雙語的小朋友, 大多數都是用下面方法之一：
1）從小就讀國際學校，在家補習中文，包括周末讀中文學校；
2）讀雙語學校，如漢基，耀中；
3）小學讀中文小學，初中以上讀國際學校；
4）中文學到F3-F4，再轉讀國際學校；
5）從小到中學畢業都讀中文學校(所謂“英中“我都歸類為中文學校)。

這些路哪條最好呢？

我大仔小中文小學，初中以上讀國際學校。他中文有小學基礎，加上小學同學都讀中文小說，像大多數的孩子一樣，畢業時能讀演義小說。所以中文基本上我都滿意。

但是，當他讀國際學校時，英文遇到很大困難。英文困難不在口語，而在寫作。除了詞匯量不如同學，最大的不同是“不會寫“。“不會寫“是指不會用英文的習慣來寫作。他從一個中文小學的優異生變成一個國際學校的中下學生，壓力可想而知。因為這時大仔年齡正值12-13歲，有時他的這種壓力會很容易變成與父母的沖突。而做父親的我往往不知問題所在。

至於小學讀耀中，中學讀ESP，我個人覺得會避免我大仔的困難。但中文學得如何，網上不知有沒有有經驗的朋友可以同我們分享？

Can you share why don't you choose Yew Chung (bilingual IS) all through from primary to secondary?  Yew Chung claims that their students are very good at both languages and they are using international cirriculum with small class as well.  Is this perfect if we can afford the fee?

I also heard that Yewchung's kids are good in both languages.  One mom commented that she attended their Open Day some time in the past & she wore quite casual that day, the Principal seemed to neglect her.

我都聽說耀中小學生花在中文上的時間不少，中文不差。但進入中學後中文如何就好少有例子。

一個人的中文程度，我覺得要到中學畢業才能基本穩定。有好多小朋友在10歲前都學了不少中文字，但長大後都不能讀中文小說。看看國際學校的華人學生就會知道這樣的小朋友不是少數，而是絕大多數。

本人也是在香港唸中文至中五, 但本人認為自己的中文程度也未能達標, 頂多只有初中程度.

學或用任何一種語言, 都需要多聽, 多看, 多寫, 才能夠保持穩定的水平.  試想想, 一般香港學生的中英文程度都不好, 大都因為他們少聽, 少看, 少寫.  除了功課忙是一個原因之外, 香港學生都很少看(有益的)課外書.  另外, 廣東話是口語, 香港人不能"我手寫我口".  這些問題在使用英語方面更見明顯.  國際學校學生的中文水平不好也不外是少接觸中文罷了.

我想，每人都知道國際學校學生的中文水平不好是少接觸了中文。但好多讀國際學校的華人小朋友在父母的壓力下，在10歲前花了大量精力學中文，這正是父母希望小朋友這樣可以多接觸中文。但事實上這樣多接觸中文並不是很有效（或者，你會說盡管這樣仍然是接觸中文不夠），因為這些小朋友很少在中學畢業時能達到自願讀中文小說的程度。這本身不是說明了問題嗎？

憑心而論，小朋友也只有在10歲前會屈服於父母壓力下才會這樣學。而盡管如此也達到不了讀中文小說的程度，實在是令人喪氣的事。

可能有人會說，能自願讀中文小說又如何？別人我不敢代言，但實話說，我會很滿意我子女的中文程度。

要耀中的中文達到local school的程度，有點不公平。但英文達不到international school的程度，就有點令人擔心了。當然，一定也有父母會覺得，中文學到這個程度，英文差一點點也是可以接受的。

不知是否我誤解了你的意思, 你說"一個人的中文程度，我覺得要到中學畢業才能基本穩定。有好多小朋友在10歲前都學了不少中文字，但長大後都不能讀中文小說"這番話是指一般學生, 還是指國際學校的學生呢?

因為我對你這番話的理解是指一般學生.  而本人有朋友在10歲以前是在香港受教育, 之後就去了美國讀書.  現在她才二十多歲, 回流香港工作, 她可以看懂中文報紙.  或許你所指是讀中文小說, 一個更高要求的層次嗎?

What parents come across here exactly reflect that studying 2 languages is not as simple as many parents here in this forum thought and in some situations will lead to unnecessary conflict within family.

The basic question to ask however is not how to master 2 languages but whether 2 languages will really make your kid fly. The associated emotional problem due to extra pressure from parents may harm even more kid's future than mastering well on only one language.

Yes, that's what I heard too.  But this maybe the expected results of a bilingual school (50/50 in both languages), they study both languages together using 50/50 of their time.  So it is difficult to master both languages to native speaker level.  

More practically is to expect achieving one language to native level, and another to working level.   If then, bilingual school like Yew Chung, CKY may not be ideal?!

Have your kids switched to IS dominant by English?  You said you are very satisfied with their Chinese standard, can you share how do you keep them up with it in secondary school stage?  

My daughter also switched from local school to IS in upper primary, due to the school program and peer group influence, she is very willing to read a lot of English books and can catch up with the English standard quickly.  However, she won't have so much time to read Chinese stories and won't be so willing to do so.  Can you share how you help your kids to keep interest in reading both?
