Re: Ability to Read
I am a dad but I still want to share some of my practices with my daughter in reading, writing and speaking. I am not sure if I have been on the right track or not.
Ever since my daughter was born, I have been using English to communicate with my daughter while my wife has been using only Cantonese. She is now in K2 in a kindergarten that teaches very minimal English. She is still learning a-z and she only has 1 English session per week but her standard is far beyond that. She can now express herself using complex sentences with high accuracy although not bearing the accent of a native speaker, which is something I must say I can't give her. So far I am pleased with her progress in speaking and I can imagine what her spoken English would be like if I did not use English with her all the time. I agree with Cheryl_Mom to a large extent that parents should use their mother-tongue with their kids. But in my daughter's case, since she does not have a rich English learning environment in school, the home is a crucial source of English learning input. The reason why I send my daughter to a 'very Chinese' kindergarten is Chinese, I think, is still the most important language she has to master.
As for writing, my daughter has the habit of writing journal every day both in Chinese and English. I made her write out her thoughts with drawings and simple words and help, of course, is needed esp. at the beginning. The effects phonics has on her are obvious and journal writing is very good for practising the high frequency words like 'a', 'for', 'he', 'their' etc.
My daughter can read most of the words that follow the phonics rules but she is not particularly keen on reading on her own at this stage. She enjoys reading with us more. Can any BK parents tell me where I can buy the Oxford Reading Tree series at lower prices (They are really expensive:-| ). Thanks PK parents for sharing some very useful websites for learning to read. |
