Re: Ability to Read

FXPC,

O, thanks so much ! You are soooooo nice.

Yes, my son is obssessed about Mighty Robot now ! He reads them every day and he insisted to put them back to the shelf in right order everytime ! And he introduced that to his best friend and they both talked about it frequently.

I heard about the Nate the Great before, not sure if my son has read it. Sure will try out. My son is not a 'big reader' in the sense that he is not acceptant to any kind of books. For example, his best friend loved Junie B Jones and recommended to him, but he did not like it.

I'll surely try out this Nate the Great and Dennis the Menace as per your advice.

Cheers,
Ruby

Re: Ability to Read

I am a dad but I still want to share some of my practices with my daughter in reading, writing and speaking. I am not sure if I have been on the right track or not.
Ever since my daughter was born, I have been using English to communicate with my daughter while my wife has been using only Cantonese. She is now in K2 in a kindergarten that teaches very minimal English. She is still learning a-z and she only has 1 English session per week but her standard is far beyond that. She can now express herself using complex sentences with high accuracy although not bearing the accent of a native speaker, which is something I must say I can't give her. So far I am pleased with her progress in speaking and I can imagine what her spoken English would be like if I did not use English with her all the time. I agree with Cheryl_Mom to a large extent that parents should use their mother-tongue with their kids. But in my daughter's case, since she does not have a rich English learning environment in school, the home is a crucial source of English learning input. The reason why I send my daughter to a 'very Chinese' kindergarten is Chinese, I think, is still the most important language she has to master.

As for writing, my daughter has the habit of writing journal every day both in Chinese and English. I made her write out her thoughts with drawings and simple words and help, of course, is needed esp. at the beginning. The effects phonics has on her are obvious and journal writing is very good for practising the high frequency words like 'a', 'for', 'he', 'their' etc.

My daughter can read most of the words that follow the phonics rules but she is not particularly keen on reading on her own at this stage. She enjoys reading with us more. Can any BK parents tell me where I can buy the Oxford Reading Tree series at lower prices (They are really expensive:-| ). Thanks PK parents for sharing some very useful websites for learning to read.

Re: Ability to Read

Hi S. Potato,

You may borrow the Oxford Reading Tree Talking Stories CD-ROM from public library. I found stage 1-5 of the ORT CD-ROMs in HKPL. Each of the CD-ROM (run in the computer) includes ~ 6-12 interactive stories in that level.

(You may recall these CD-ROMs online and check out at any destinated library. The reservation fee is only $2.5 / item.)

Re: Ability to Read

Hello Bob&Wendy,

Sorry for the late reply.

After entering into the HKPL website,

1. Choose search --> all materials.

2. Input "Oxford Reading Tree" for title search.

3. 9 records will be poped up, you can find ORT CD-ROMs stage 1-5 in this list.

4. You can choose your interested item. Check whether the item is available in library near your living area.

5. If you want to reserve an item, then click the button (make a reservation) on the right top corner. Input your library card info / password and choose the destinated library to pick up your CD.

Re: Ability to Read

Hello CherylMum,

How old is your daughter? (~6.5???) How many books can she finish everyday?

My son loves Tommy Tales too. He'd finished TT book 1-23. Yes. That's a good series covering
many different topics (space, dinosaur, ocean and ...) which can widen childrens' vocabulary lists and general knowledge.

I didn't subscribe readinga-z.com.  Do you have any other good series recommened?

If your daughter loves detective stories, you may borrow Cam Jansen. This is a series of books about Jansen who has photographic memory and she helps in solving many cases. You may try the simplier version Easy-to-read (Young Cam Jansen) or the full version (Cam Jansen).

BTW, did you hear the Magic School Bus series? There are 3 types of MSB: Classic Series (~10books), TV-show Series (~2X titles) and Chapter books (1-2X). This series of books introduces scientific topics in an interesting approach. This is a very popular series of books in US and Aus.

Share with you later.

Re: Ability to Read

Hi Chery Mum
Thank you for your sharing. My son loves Tommy Tales also. He now is starting to read.
CherylMum 寫道:
You can download Tommy Tales for free in the following website:
http://learningpage.com/free_pages/ewe_preview.html

For Magic School bus, you can buy it in the Page One.  I am not sure whether they have it in the public library.

For Young cam Jansen, just check that you can borrow it from the public library.
