真正學到中文的國際學校

1) 香港家庭教育最大的問題不是教不教的問題, 而是教太多的問題. 我想, 大多數人都會認同家教很重要. 但家教應該教什麼卻大家有不同理解.

父母在教育方面能影響小朋友的, 主要在身教, 幫小朋友找到興趣所在, 為小朋友找到好的peer.

我不否認家教的重要, 但過分家教的效果並不好. 讓小朋友參加各種活動, 不是為了做一個漂亮的profile, 而是為了幫小朋友找到興趣所在. 幫小朋友找一間好學校, 是為了找到好的peer.

回到'跟爸爸媽媽講都會差過在學校學"這個問題. 我是指語言的學習, 而且是讀和寫. 我想, 還沒有研究發現任何新的學習方法好過在學校學習.

2) 你反問老師會教bad words? 我想答案是明顯的, 當然不會. bad words 是從同學處學來的. 而且我認為學好一個語言, 應該學會該語言的bad words. 而且bad words都不夠, 應是學會從"best words" 到"worst words"譜線上的所有"words".

廣義上來講, 老師也教bad words. 部分可以從閱讀中學來. 不是嗎?

I have seen some boys of my neighbours who learn to speak a lot of fowl words when they joined the secondary, obviously they have to talk the same language in their peer group.  Parents have to go to work all day, the teens just go along with their peers after school here and there, so can easily go wrong.

So choosing a good school with healthy culture and high quality students is really important, I believe, more than considering English or Chinese language used by the school.

chinese students cannot expect to learn that from classmates(western).

i agree that it is more of a time problem.
Parents are usually busy at jobs,
not much time to face their kids.

其實﹐對英文好﹐人人有不同理解。就像對世界上最好大學的ranking一樣，人見人智。

大多數亞裔都希望子女有“一技之長”。如以此為目的，local schools教的英文確實已夠，而且可能SATI的考試分數還不低。當然，這還只是光講學英文。如果除開“培養獨立思考”這一因素不講，local schools比國際學校還有一大強項，就是學生的科學課目考試分數會好很多。如果這是你最希望你的孩子從學校得到的，香港的所謂精英學校應該是你的第一選擇。

但這個選擇的缺點是，進入美國最好人文學院(包括大部分長春藤大學)讀本科的機會低。進一步，盡管沒有進入美國最好幾間大學讀本科，但進入美國最好幾間研究生院的機會還是很大的。

但如果子女想讀人文(liberal arts), 最好還是選國際學校。選國際學校，除了有機會學好英文﹐更較local schools容易避免“小時了了，大未必佳”的結局。

講這麼多﹐我可能已對教育小朋友上了癮。

另外, 讀國際學校請中文補習老師是最不可取的方法. 黎種方法學中文, 係學幾多忘幾多.

基本上, 在中文學校時間越長, 中文越好. (廢話 )

新加坡在雙語教育上比香港成功. 真係唔明, 點解雙語教育上, 香港可以做得咁差.

只回答點解香港做得咁差, 可能因為香港的小朋友大部分真係唔使用英文同人溝通有關,大部分用英文的時間係在學校(可能只係學GRAMMER, 真正講可能只係簡單的幾句), 其他時間没有外籍小朋友做FRIENDS, 根本唔使講英文. 反而SINGAPORE 會有馬拉人,印度人, 小朋友要用英文溝通, 英文自然好過香港的小朋友

Yes, you are right, but we can employ Philippine home helper with good command of English.  Many employers in Hong Kong communicate with their helpers in half English and half Cantonese.  The helpers, in turn,  talk to the kids in broken Cantonese with English mixed.  As a result, the kids can't even communicate with their peers properly.

My strategy is
1. Select a helper with reasonable command in English
2. Talk to my helper in English ONLY
3. Ask my helper to talk to my son in English ONLY

The advantages are:
1. Your children will think that it is normal for people speaking two languages and it is necessary
2. The relationship between your children and your helper will become much better because there is no communication problem

Some people may think that we speak much better English than Philippine helpers, but sometimes the reverse is true.  Many foreigners can't understand English with Hong Kong accent.  I know that this is not a perfect solution for speaking perfect English.  But it is better than letting your children being poisioned with broken Cantonese.  Think about it.
