Re: 讀傳統

My girl was accepted by one of the ESF schools on HK side after the 1st round interview.  I think there are less than 30% of chinese students in her class.  Actually, among the 5 new chinese students I just met, two were from Victoria Contonese/English classes, two from Putonghua/English classes and one from Starters School.  I haven't got a chance to talk to the others yet.

Re: 讀傳統

cilla

Do you mean that most of the Chinese students got accepted are mostly from local kindergarten, not the more international kindergarten?  4 from Victoria and 1 from Starter.  That means the more international kindergarten may not be able to train the kids more prepared for the admission of ESF.???

Re: 讀傳統

agree with chuchuaunt.

my son just finished the interview this afternoon and the result is failed even if he's studying in REAL int'l kindergarten. the interviewer explained to me that they're required the kids who can answer there questions in SENTENCES, not words or any simply phrase. the comments she gave to my son is he is good in english but he can't say the answer and introduce a story in SENTENCES   after the interview, i can share my experience is if u really want to put ur kids to ESF, english must there 1st language even if in school or at home............

Re: 讀傳統

Kareese,

i've submitted the form very late (the end of Feb 06) and they've finished all the interview........it's around 6-8 kids and i've no idea how may can pass........ what i means i'll not let my son to study in this school fm primary to secondary this long year, if admitted, we just will let him to the school around 2-3 yrs, surely, the expensive school fee is a concern and the other reason is we're planned to send him to another country..............sorry to make the misunderstand since my poor english writing, anyway, thanks

bebe_c,

Sorry to hear that your son failed in the interview.
Did you submit the application form after the submission deadline? How many kids are invited for interview today ? And how many of them pass?

I've also read your message in another forum, but just wonder that you said that even you boy is admitted, you will not let him in because of the expensive school fee, but isn't that your son is studying in Think full day? the school fee is even higher than ESF !

Re: 讀傳統

bebe_c,

Thanks for your reply.  I believe your son is a small boy (born by end of 2001) and he has done very well indeed!  ESF is expecting kids to use English as first language, so the expectation is higher and there are really too many applicants.  So don't feel bad about it, your boy is still so small, just take this as an experience, there are so many choices out there.

In fact, Christ Church Kinder (CCKG) also require a K1 kid (3 to 3.5 years old) to answer questions in English using full sentences and there are 2000 people competing for 80 seats!  It is like this as well in a lot of DSS/private school interviews!  So hope you don't take it too seriously and don't give too much pressure to your son.

Bebe_c,

Thank you for your reply! May I know which month your boy was born ? I guess he was born at the end of year so that he is still small for an interview. Anyway, don't be too disappointed, after gaining some experience in interview, I'm sure he would do better next time.

Re: 讀傳統

ltse,

It is really a dilemma.  We want our child to be good in English and in Chinese at the same time.  It seems that it is more possible to be fluent in both languages in local school, than in int'l school as English will be more emphasis.  It is really a tough decision.

Is you child studying in local kindergarten or int'l kindergarten now?  How did you prepare him for the interview?

Re: 讀傳統

Actually, my son is studying in Victoria.  His English is quite good even he only have 4.5 years old.  I havn't give him any preparation and training beforehand.  Because I submitted the application form in Feb (late submission), then I just rec'd a call from ESF to call for Monday interview last Friday.  So, I just told a story about ESF and let him to know more about this school, etc....  Then, I talked to him in english and remind him can't speak Chinese during the interview and we arrived school.  And make sure hold the teacher's hand and happy to answer all questions.  My son's character is a bit shy and he told me the teacher was playing the puzzel with him, and let the childs to draw a picture.  And also ask him about the members of family and where he lives.  I don't know this is a tips or not, but hope can help you.

Re: 讀傳統

The ESF has set clearly the priorities for applicants.  Details pls check the esf website : http://www.esf.edu.hk

The location of the schools, no. of applicants, individual school's admission policy may also affect the chance of admission.  If there are more foreigners living in that catchment area, it is likely that there're more applicants.  Some schools such as CWBS in Clearwater Bay & SJS in Shatin almost doesn't offer interview for local Chinese, especially those from local KG.  I know KJS is a bit easier.  The competition is comparatively lower than some other areas.  My friend's son (Born in Y2K) was from ESF Abacus KG.  He could only speak simple sentences or even only phrases & has strong HK Eng. accent, he was accepted to P1 last year.

Pls bear in mind upon offering an interview, you have to show parents' & kid's passport as well as proof of home address.

Saturn.

Admission priority - Official source

Hi. My girl is studying at ESF Y1. Yesterday I got an official newsletter from ESF. Here is a paragraph on its admission policy:
"ESF is reviewing the category system by which we prioritize our admissions.
Parents should check on the website closer to the application period to check the updated priority categories. The principle by which the highest priority goes to those who cannot access the local schools system (i.e. those who do not have the necessary proficiency in Cantonese) will not change. Priority within admissions categories will still go to those with older brothers and sisters in a school, to the children of former students, and in Year One to children attending an ESF kindergarten. In Year One the priority is for interview only, even for siblings of children attending an ESF school."

I hope these info is useful and can help to clarify some ambiguities.

My personal UNOFFICIAL interpretation of the statement "the highest priority goes to those who cannot access the local schools system" means that 讀傳統幼稚園入到EFS 小學機會is less because these applicants can access the local school system easily.

Fact clarification -1

My girl is studying at Kennedy P1. In her class there are only 6-7 local Chinese (out of a class of 28-30).
The other classes are similar.
Most of these local Chinese are from ESF kinder.
