Million of thanks for you to share your son's life in SPC.

My boy is a scout too! Just back from camp last night, with mosquite bites all over his legs, but it's a good training for him.  I have no regret to "force" him to join 10th indeed ^.^ But he's doing bad this year, just a bit worry if 10th HKG will still accept him next year.

Don't worry, my boy keeps telling me that your boy has done well in the Scout, & he is very smart too.  You may have set a standard too high to match.

Thanks hogwarts!  I know my boy is enjoying his scout life, he likes it too. But I mean, his academic performance is .... this year that he may be expelled from 10th HKG.

Hello everyone,

Thank you all for your warm welcome. It's really feel like home here. It is summer time. Let the kids have some fun. But mind you, still ask them to read through the summer time. For those boys who are still in lower grades, help them to find out their interest. This can be done through the summer activities.

Every summer, I registered all kinds of stuffs for my son, like kayaking, swimming, still going to scouts, and playing cello. He did also Chinese ink painting, and went for some fun lessons from CUHK or HKUST.

So get rolling and let's have some fun together.

No news about the HKALE.  My boy can go to his first choice and also fellow scouts in his class.

今天替兒子註冊並取了書單, 在此想問問書單上參考書是否可不買? 如:1) Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (English-Chinese)
2) The Advanced Learner's Dictionary of Current English (8th Ed) (Paperback)
3) Millennium School Atlas 2010

除此之外, 書單上所有書是否一定要買齊? 學校安排了書商在校發售課本, 不用自己四處找, 很好的安排, 我想也會有九折優惠吧?

No need to buy dictionary.
Re: Altas, it will be used in class but not always referred to, you may consider buying 2nd hand book.

There is a book shop at Queen's Road West near Chiu Kwong Street called 協益, they offer 15% less. I bought from this shop last year.

Dictionary 不用買，Atlas是地圖，上Geography時会用下，用足六年，當然如中四不選讀，就只用三年。其他所有書都要買，無論在學校、商務、三联、晨衝買書均享九折。

謝謝您們的回覆! 原來去年有Maths 及Science bridging course. 今年只有英文有bridging course, 中文要做一本指定暑期作業及提供一些書目, 鼓勵學生自行閱讀, 而數學就要做一本學校提供的數學作業. 我曾電學校詢問, 希望不要有錯漏. 不知大家有否去年Science bridging course 的資料給我看看?

Science usually is not a problem in S1, until they reach S3.  This year, Physic is the S3 final exam killer subject.

Maths is difficult, in my view only, because in primary, what they had learnt was Arithmetic and in secondary, it is Mathematic, very different ball games.   Understanding the theory and following with lot of exercise, are key factors for success in maths.  
Regarding science, logical thinking is very important, also should use daily experiences to explain science, such as pushing a coin on a table to explain f=ma, or why the soup tastes better when adding potato, there is a book bearing this name, good for the boys to understand chemistry.

There are time-talbes for exams, you can go the school's web-site to check out the time-table of yr 2011-12.  The mid-year exam is usually right after the Christmas holiday and final exam usually starts in the first week of June.  In between, they have quiz all the time, and missing one or two would not be big problem.

We had allowed our boy a honey moon year in S1, did cost him something but S3 is the more important year.
