samanthavikki,

JennyL,
Better late than never.  It's so good to hear your response.  Obviously my daughter mainly speaks English now.  So I would focus how I can supplement her Chinese literature without violating her learning approach & philosophy in the school.  I have consulted the Mandarin teacher whether I should continue teaching her in Mandarin or Cantonese at home.  She suggested that we should adopt cantonese to introduce more phrases to her.  It will help her understanding during Mandarin lesson.  Simultaneously I will borrow more Chinese story books to read with her.

chingyu,
Although we do not have a tutor for chinese, I know many other children do, and they are all doing it in mandarin. Do let me know how it goes once your child is having cantonese classes. Now that you mentioned it, it sounds quite logical. Actually, I do think that my children know too little cantonese terms too.

There are always people coming and going in international schools. For example, one of my child's classmate would be leaving Hong Kong January 2008. There are a lot of non-local children at RC. They might be here for a couple of years and then they would leave.

In fact, you might even have a chance for 08/09 year 1. There are lots of applications but not all children would be accepted. Also, a lot of people apply for more than one school and would give up seats when school starts in August.

In the meantime, I think you should seek alternatives. Try another school for him for next year. And if you are really keen, just keep your application at RC. Have you applied other schools for him? Honestly, even if you have met the deadline with RC, you should have had some alternative choices too. Children are unpredictable and emotional. You just cannot predict what your child would (or would not be willing to) do at the interview.

N70, ChingYu, JennyL:

I am not familiar with other international schools. But there are also Japanese IS and Hong Lok Yuen IS in the New Territories. Heard that both are quite ok.
If you have asked ICS and they are still accepting applications, I do think you should consider this school. I have heard mostly positive comments about them.

If you are talking about the "official" policy of admission, interviews are granted according to the date of application. I think that language ability would still be the main thing they are looking for, instead of nationality or ethnicity.
So for those who has the language skills, it would be easy; for those who does not have the language skills, it would be difficult. So with this consideration, you may say that English speaking non-local children might have advantage. Also, admission procedure can be quite subjective. It is difficult to say whether they would "unofficially" give priority to non-local students.
However, I still think that the majority of applicants in most international schools are in fact local chinese children. When we are talking about "waiting list" or "queue" in most international schools, most applicants are in fact local chinese children. So, you are probably still "competing" mainly with local chinese children.

RC PTA (RAPT)

RCHK PTA (RAPT)

Hi,

I am a parent of RCHK and would like to exchange some thoughts and ideas that what other RCHK parents would want from the PTA or the school since less than  1/3 of the parents join the PTA and very few showed up in the meeting and activities this year.

Personally, I hope the PTA can do the following

1. Set up a website where
- parents can discuss and exchange ideas and opinions
- do regular polling and survey to collect parents opinions and ideas on different issues, with follow-up discussion in the PTA committe and publish meeting minutes and decisions and plans  on those topics
- the PTA would write down its misson statement and objectives,  plan actual  activities and set attainable goals
- list out the power of the PTA
- publish financial and membership enrollement status, donation and activities plans regularly

2. Help to organize more extra-curriculum activities
- there is a CAS (Creativity , Actions and Services) programme being offered by the school and most of the activities are lead by the RC teachers. However, the width and depth of the activities being offered are  very limited and without continuity. I guess that is  mainly due to admin. and humun resources limitation of the school, even though parents would have to  pay for those activities.

As a regular parent, I am not sure whether those extra-curriculum activites  MUST be organized by the school or the ESF but I really hope if the school or PTA can help to outsource part of that to YMCA or other organizations.

I am not sure if I am the only one who hold the above opinions.

Inputs from  parents of other schools are also welcome!

Thank you!

RC PTA

I am quite disappointed that there is no other RC parents feedback on this topic. I am sure there are RC parents reading this and some of them should be in  the RAPT committee as well.

May be  I am asking too much from a volunteer organization which can only help to prepare snacks and coffee once a month in the "Coffee morning" and asking for donations without a good reason and detailed planning, even though most of the parents would not attend this gathering and would not  use this platform to express their opinions  about what and how the PTA is operating in order to help the school and the students. That explains why less than 50 parents (compare to 1400 students)  showed up in the RAPT AGM in Nov this year and no ones seems to care about this.

Why don't you pass your good suggestion to RAPT directly?

Obviously I am not one of committees.  I am just a busy working mom.

Good question! I did and received very negative feedback with a bunch of reasons(or excuses) which I can hardly agree with. I am trying to gather more inputs and opinions from other RC parents or committees to see if I am the only one who has  the problem with it. Thanks.

Which RAPT committee you spoke to?
What did you mean by negative feedback?
Exactly how did that person respond to your comments?
Did you mean that he/she said that they were not going to even consider your suggestions?
This is more than your requests we are talking about. If any committee is so unhelpful, we should report that to the co-chairs or even the school.
So can you let us have more details?

I am not one of the RAPT members but I found that they have already devoted a lot of time and effort to the welfare of the students, such as the School Fair coming tommorrow.  During the past few weeks, I often saw the RAPT members working hard in the school all day long.  They have already devoted so much that I am deeply impressed and found unreasonable to ask for more.  Frankly speaking, there are not many parents willing to join this time-demanding voluntary work.  There are only a few committee members and its always hard to recuit voluntary helpers in different events.  So each of the existing RAPT members have had to take up a few posts in the different sub-committees.  So rather to voice out what they haven't taken good care of, why not join them and work out the way you want the school to be?
