Re: Renaissance College Interview

Hi,

My daughter is accepted by RC.
After the interview, I was really disappointed by their interview approach as I mentioned earlier in this title.  I wrote a letter to them expressing my concern and suggesting the althernative in interviewing young kid. My letter didn't express my willingness of entering RC.  You know, their approach really surprise me and I am reluctant to let my daughter to study there now.

Will you guys register  to RC?  Anyone will not register?

Re: Renaissance College Interview

My daughter has also been accepted by RC.  I am inclined to take the offer.  My main concern is whether RC's Chinese curriculum is sufficient ( understandably it would not be comparable with local schools').  Any parents of Pheonix students here could advise on this?  Thanks a lot.

Re: Renaissance College Interview

Anyone got rejected? I think thay are hungry for new students and they would not reject anyone at this stage.

Do you all think this is a good school? What do you like about it?

Re: Renaissance College Interview

My son was also accepted for year 2 although he was shy at the interview.   My concern is if my son can switch to year 2 from K3 in a local Chinese KG.  I will accept the offer but I have to give my son some additional lessons so as to catch up with the lessons of year 1.  Anyone has idea on what is taught in year 1 of Phoneix.

Thanks.

Re: Renaissance College Interview

Hi Cinamoroll,

Heard that RC Chinese is not too bad, at least they teach traditional character. Cannot compare those liked Singapore IS, CKY or the likes.

Re: Renaissance College Interview

Yes, agreed. They need to fill up the places.

Places will be getting competitive and I foresee RC gaining reputation in the next few years.

I also target to let my children study in RC when they turn P1 level.

Why Doris, it is a good school. Or you expect to have a difficult, full of obstables interview ? Give it a try.

Re: Renaissance College Interview

I also believe that most students will be accepted as long as they can understand English (need not talk fluently because most children are shy in the interview).

Regarding the interview arrangement, although it was not satisfactory, I found it understandable because they might not have enough resources to arrange group interview in child friendly classroom setup in view of the number of students they need to interview for all grades.

Talking about the school, it is a new one so parents should get prepared to work with her and be tolerant in some areas, including management.

After all, I will take the offer and use one year to figure out whether the school can deliver what I've expected – emphasis on English but still with acceptable Chinese standard (20%), encouraging reading, thinking and creativity.  Most important, whether my son enjoys attending school and has enough time to have a healthy and balanced life but not be drown in homework, dictations and tests emphasizing too much on replication and scores at his early age of study.

No, I am surely not looking for a difficult interview.  What I am looking for is an international school approach interview.  Last time they did the group interview approach.

Anyway, I am still thinking if this is a best  choice for my kid.  Chinese level is my concern for sure.  Since Chinese lecturcy will be important in the future as Chinese will play the important role in world economic.  In Canada, most public schools encourage student to learn Chinese as their foreign language.

However, I believe that student in RC will be much more happier than student in local school.  I know some Phonix parent, they said there is no homework in P1, most lessons are easy if compare to their KG.  Their kids used to study at ST. CAT, the pretty difficult KG.  My kid is now studying in St. Cat too.

Also, I found from their web page that they are still looking for teacher worldwide.  Do you think they will be ready for the new school term?

Well, while hearing from the news that teachers in HK avocate their discontent towards the Ed. system as well as the Govt.  How can you imagine your kids can get good education from these angry teachers?  This is also a reason to turn me to RC.

Hard to decide...isn't it?

Doris

Re: Renaissance College Interview

Cinamoroll,

My son is now in P.1 class of Phoenix. They have Chinese class (in Cantonese and Mandarin for P.1-2, then all Mandarin starting from P.3) for 50minutes everyday. I would say their Chinese is much better than the other ESF schools or international schools, but of course it's still far lagged behind from the local schools. However, my son is very happy with his Chinese teacher and now he does have some interest in Chinese, although his English is better.

They do have some homework, but very little. Just a few pages of English (printing, crosswords, etc) and a page of Chinese (printing) being distributed every Friday, to be done during the weekend. And they are encouraged to read many many books. They will borrow the library book at their own choice, once a week. Besides, they have the "Snuggle up and read" scheme in which they have to do simple book report (can be simple sentences, or even drawings). For this, the teacher will give the book to each kid according to his/her  reading level. And, the kid can take their time as long as they like to finish the book. Once he/she finishes the book, he/she just needs to return it back to the teacher and she will fill him/her with another book. My son used to finish the books every day as it was very easy picture books before. Now, as his teacher found that he can read chapter books, the books that he takes home are all chapter books now, with many many words and many many pages. So, it will take him a few days to finish (or even a week when he's lazy). I'm very happy with this scheme as it really forster the reading habit of the kids.

Also, there are many good programmes e.g. the Star of the Week. In which, each kid has an opportunity to be the Star of the Week and do some presentation (just simple introduction about himself like name, age, favourite color/sport/TV show, etc) and then being asked by the classmates on some simple questions. It's not difficult but it was fun. It helps develop the kids' comprehension and communication skills. And overall, all the children are not shy and involve actively in the class activities.

I do think Renaissance College will be a good school.

Hope this help.
Ruby

Re: Renaissance College Interview

I also believe it should be a good school and it should be gaining it's reputation in the next couple of years.

There are a number of reasons why I think Renassiance College may be a better choice than other ESF (such as Shatin Junior) and other International and Local schools.

1. It is a newly built school, tailor-made to meet the requirement of modern education. It has good facilities such as swimming pool and performing art theatre hall.

2. It follows the International Bacculaureate (IB) program and lead to IB diploma which is a well recognized university entrance qualification for both HK and oversea universities. For those who don't know much about IB dilpoma, United World College in Ma On Shun has been running IB diploma for a long time and some of their ex-students were able to get in top universities worldwide. Other International schools in HK such as CIS have also offer IB diploma for quite a number of years. Thier top students were getting into Oxford, Cambridge, Yale, etc.

3. I have trust in the UK education system. It's students can do very well and able to get in top universities without putting the child and parents through a lot of stress in the learning process. Renaissance College is an ESF school and I hope it will follow the ESF tradition in this respect.

4. Students can acquire good written and spoken English, and also able to learn Mandarin and Traditional Chinese at the same time. English is still and will remain as the first language worldwide.

5. Mr.Kenny, the principal, is very experienced in implementing IB programs. I believe he is a capable leader in this respect.

6. It's location is good for learning. Situated in the less busy side of Ma On Shan, and easy access to KCR station.

7. Cost is $6250 a month for 10 months. No denbenture is required. This is cheaper compared to other International schools such as Yew Chung, CIS, etc.

8. "Internationally minded, Locally based". As it has to admit 80% local students, the child will grow up in a more local environment. The child can develope a stronger Chinese culture, as well as good english and a critical and logical learning approach for future life.

I may not be 100% right but with the existing hardware (school campus) and software (IB Program), and with the appropriate leader (Principal), the school should be heading the right direction.

Re: Renaissance College Interview

Ruby,

A lot of thanks for your first-hand information which is detailed, timely and useful.  It reinforced my confidence in Renaissance College, though I still hope it could  have more emphasis on the teaching of Chinese language, particularly writing.  Perhaps I need to let my daughter attend some Chinese language courses outside school.

On the whole, I believe Renaissance College will become more and more popular over time.

Thanks again.

Re: Renaissance College Interview

Ruby,
I agree, RC is better than the other ESF, for the Chinese students(Hong Kong students) if they have Cantonese & Mandarin lesson everyday is better than only 1 week 1 time 30 mins( ESF), that is not a lesson, just a snack, if you're the native is fine, but if you study in ESF then, you have to paid extract $ to learn Mandarin & Chinese, that is the same as the local school, their english is very good, but Mandarin or Chinese are not good, so what will you think for future.
So RC provide a good enviornment & curriculam, that's a good choice.

Re: Renaissance College Interview

Cinamoroll,

Honestly, it's just give and take. If you want more Chinese, then the portion for English will decrease.
My friend's son studying in CIS, with 50/50 Chinese/English, she said her son's English is not as good as those of other int'l school children.

So, I won't be too greedy. I think we have to be realistic with what the school can do. While, I'm hiring a private tutor once a week to help on my son's Mandarin/Chinese.

Just do the best I can do.

Re: Renaissance College Interview

RC also accepted my son.

$6,250 per month, is that all? What other costs should I expect? Of course, textbooks, uniforms, stationery......

I incline to believe it will be the ideal school, I agree with many reasons you mentioned above. However, it is expensive, what do you think? This is why I still hesitate. Moreover, my son also has a little sister!
