Re: Renaissance College Interview
Cinamoroll,
My son is now in P.1 class of Phoenix. They have Chinese class (in Cantonese and Mandarin for P.1-2, then all Mandarin starting from P.3) for 50minutes everyday. I would say their Chinese is much better than the other ESF schools or international schools, but of course it's still far lagged behind from the local schools. However, my son is very happy with his Chinese teacher and now he does have some interest in Chinese, although his English is better.
They do have some homework, but very little. Just a few pages of English (printing, crosswords, etc) and a page of Chinese (printing) being distributed every Friday, to be done during the weekend. And they are encouraged to read many many books. They will borrow the library book at their own choice, once a week. Besides, they have the "Snuggle up and read" scheme in which they have to do simple book report (can be simple sentences, or even drawings). For this, the teacher will give the book to each kid according to his/her reading level. And, the kid can take their time as long as they like to finish the book. Once he/she finishes the book, he/she just needs to return it back to the teacher and she will fill him/her with another book. My son used to finish the books every day as it was very easy picture books before. Now, as his teacher found that he can read chapter books, the books that he takes home are all chapter books now, with many many words and many many pages. So, it will take him a few days to finish (or even a week when he's lazy). I'm very happy with this scheme as it really forster the reading habit of the kids.
Also, there are many good programmes e.g. the Star of the Week. In which, each kid has an opportunity to be the Star of the Week and do some presentation (just simple introduction about himself like name, age, favourite color/sport/TV show, etc) and then being asked by the classmates on some simple questions. It's not difficult but it was fun. It helps develop the kids' comprehension and communication skills. And overall, all the children are not shy and involve actively in the class activities.
I do think Renaissance College will be a good school.
Hope this help.
