Re: New School: Renaissance College of ESF in Ma On Shan

Hi,

My son has got an offer from ESF Kindergarten for the January intake in 2006 and he's now doing his K1 in KCBK. I may want to send him to ESF later. Then, next year, he'll apply for P1 in ESF primaries. Renaissance is one of my choices. I have some questions. Please help.

- How much is the school fee for Renaissance?

- Is it very far away from KCR station? Which KCR station is the nearest to the school?

- As there's no deadline for application, can I send my application now (starting P1 in September 2007)? Is it the school will arrange the interview soon after receiving interview?

Many thanks for your comments.

Re: New School: Renaissance College of ESF in Ma On Shan

Hi Minggrace,

Tuition fee for Renaissance will be HK$62,000 for 10 months.

It will be located just next to the KCR station. Hang On Station.

You should hand in your application asap. I'm not sure when's the interview though.

Hope these are of help.

Dear Ruby 1219

Can you comment on Phoenix School re their curriculum and quality?  Have they introduced the new Renaissance College to you parents in the Primary section?

How do you compare Phoenix with other ESF since it's more expensive than the others?

Re: New School: Renaissance College of ESF in Ma On Shan

Hi

I'm also interested in this school and would like to apply for it. Is the application to be done by ESF "centrally"? Does anybody know the contact number of this school? Address? Is it I should send application one year in advance or anytime I want
(as soon as possible)? After sending the application form, when will an interview be given? After weeks? After months? ? I read the website of ESF but couldn't find information about this school. Only the Phoneix one can be found on the website. Is there a website for this school?

Many thanks.

Re: New School: Renaissance College of ESF in Ma On Shan

Hi

Can somebody who has kids studying now in Phoenix's Primary/Secondary session comment on the quality?  How are the teachers performing and what's the academic standard there?

I think it's advisable to look at the comments first before we apply.

Re: New School: Renaissance College of ESF in Ma On Shan

Sandrine,

THANKS a lot for providing information on Renaissance College of ESF. I phoned the school yesterday about the date of Open House/Day. I know there's one to be held on Nov 1 but sadly I won't be available on weekdays.
THANKS anyway.

Minggrace

Re: New School: Renaissance College of ESF in Ma On Shan

Sorry for replying late, as i was out-town in the past 2 weeks.

Honestly, I can't say much about the curriculum and quality of the school as I'm not professional about it. But I would say that I'm happy with the school as the teachers and staff are nice, the curriculum seems well-organized and tight. And they do have different themes and activities at different times. And the occasionally hold field trips for the kids. E.g. the theme for these few weeks is "Community Helper", then they are taking the children to fire station, police staion and post office, etc. Seems their curriculum is interesting and lively. And, they had just started the reading programme in October.

When comparing the school fee...I would say...Renaissance is not 'too' expensive as they are providing Mandarin everyday (if you deduct the HK$2,000 cost that you have to pay extra for your kids' private Mandarin lessons), they offer the new campus which is spectacular, plus the IB system. To me, it's worth the money.

Dear Ruby,
Your info is really helpful.  But just want to know how would you compare Renaissance College to some of the local famous schools such as DGS, Maryknoll, St.Paul, etc?

Re: New School: Renaissance College of ESF in Ma On Shan

I applied the new Renaissance College and received the acknowledgement letter, but I don't know when will have the interview.

Actually, I am still wondering if I should let my child to join international school or not.  Some parents from Phoenix told me that their chinese standard is quite low if compare to the local school.  Beside English, I would like my child learn good Chinese as well.

I will do the interview and consider it later.

Do you feel that the application fee $800 is too expensive?  Is it deserved?

Re: New School: Renaissance College of ESF in Ma On Shan

application fee is not really a matter if you compare to the monthly school fees you have to pay in future.  I consider Renaissance / Pui Kiu as second choice should we fail to enter ESF. How about Japanese Int'l School (Tai Po)? It is a "real" IS and almost as expensive as Renaissance (7xxx / month). I've heard that it is a high standard IS and the school environment is excellent.

Re: New School: Renaissance College of ESF in Ma On Shan

O sorry, I really have no knowledge about the local schools. And I think it's very hard to compare. In fact, you should choose between local & int'l schools based on your expectation and criteria for your kids' education. E.g. for me, I want my son to study happily and relaxingly. And, I want him to have exposure to different cultures. Plus, I want him to command a good level of English and Mandarin. These are the reasons why I chose int'l school and Renaissance for him.

There is a trade-off
You cannot get the best of both worlds.
You value English more --> IS
You value Chinese more --> local school

>> application fee $800 is too expensive?

It is reduced this year.
Last year it was 1200 or 1300.
can't remember exactly

My kid is now P5, should I apply now for Secondary year 1 of the new Renaissance College?  If I apply next year, does it mean that I should apply Secondary Year 2?

Re: New School: Renaissance College of ESF in Ma On Shan

I think you better call them to ask. For P.1, they accept application anytime throughout the year.

Re: New School: Renaissance College of ESF in Ma On Shan

don't worry.  It's easy! My daugther now study P.1 she is HKSAR only.  Mother and father is chinese nothing special.  She is very happy in school and english improve a lot.  Whole day only 1 lesson in chinese (madrain). All english.  However, I feel her 紀律 is worst than before so much.  Now, ask her doing some extra exeise. She always refuse.

Re: New School: Renaissance College of ESF in Ma On Shan

Kbaby,

No worries. Actually, the policy of Renaissance is the opposite to ESF schools. They have to accept over 70% (or 80%) HK residents instead of foreigners or foreign passport holders.

mabelku,

Which class is your daughter in ?
I found my son enjoys very much in Phoenix. And he's more outspoken and willing to talk about his school life. I did not see him having behavioural change/problems ?! Maybe it's just becos' your daughters is growing up and having her own wills rather than being changed in the school ?
I don't know...maybe you should talk to her homeroom teacher about that ?
