Fanfanbb's advice is right. For HK kids, PY1 is the best timing with relatively greater chances to get in. Another advantage is that if kids go through PY1 and PY2's education in SIS, they would be better prepared and more easily adapted to P1, cos' they have built up the required bilingual foundation and got adapted to the school's bilingual environment
Just share what I have : SIS PY1 PY2 只有口試面試.
In fact 口試 doesn't mean just causal talk... they will test kids Chines / Eng / Math concept varbally.... just no need to write on paper. Of course it is comparatively more simple than P1 's. Expectation far higher than those branded local kindergarten.... so get prepare.

I am more interested to know how the priority works for Singaporeans' entry. I have read about Singaporeans who failed to get a spot in SIS, but most of the sources are not from direct, for eg. friend's friend.
How do they test the Maths? They are only 3/4 years old kids...? I heard parents are not allowed to go in the interview so not so sure how they test the kids.
According to my understanding, sinagporeans have absolute priority, i.e. regardless of the performance of the kids in the interview... the case of your colleague may probably be due to 'late application', or because of application to PY2? (not PY1?), because PY2 have much fewer seats.
