Re: ESF Primary has Manadrin class?

SJS & KJS will be the pilot schools to have daily Mandarin in Jan.  Some kids are good in mandarin because many parents send their kids to have extra lessons. Kids wont speak mandarin in school unless it's during mandarin lessons.

Really?  SJS will have daily Mandarin lesson in Jan 2007?  Where did you hear this news?  I have not heard of it (my daughter is studying in SJS).

And, do you know whether they will assign the students to different Mandarin lesson according to their Mandarin ability (since SJS has conducted a comprehensive review of the Mandarin ability of all students earlier this year).

To CherylMum,

Don't worry, Dr. Weston will send newsletter home to inform parents.

Re: ESF Primary has Manadrin class?

Is Mandarin really that important in a place like HK where 99% of the kids either speak English or Cantonese? It is hard for me to comprehend it is currently becoming a criteria for choosing which school to study. It is even more difficult to comprehed fluent mandarin is expected from a child in a school with only 1 lesson of mandarin a day.

To me, having daily Mandarin lessons is not my major consideration in selecting a school (otherwise I won't choose ESF!).

That said, learning a language when the kid is still young has its advantage.  Like me, I learnt Mandarin only in the university.  Though I was excellent in pinyin, I could not grasp the pronunciation very well and the accent is of course a bit "odd".

So, having Mandarin lessons is a plus, but not necessarily a must.

In fact, I still prefer my daughter to learn Chinese using Cantonese, which will be much easier to them, be it reading or writing.

Agree!

Re: ESF Primary has Manadrin class?

Learning Mandarin is not really that important to the children, but it is important in the eyes of the parents.

Why did everybody study English decades ago?  Practicability.

Now it is the same case for Mandarin, whether for political or commercial reasons.  Knowing an additional language (in this case, another dialect) definitely opens up a lot more opportunities for oneself.  This being said, I also agree that learning Mandarin is a plus but not a must.

Re: ESF Primary has Manadrin class?

I really do not know where all the jobs are in the future. Maybe you have some crystal ball.

I guess we are all learning 2nd language which is English. Mandarin is considered to be the 3rd.

Re: ESF Primary has Manadrin class?

It is always good to learn more than less but pushing Mandarin to such a sacre status seems rather trendy than for the good sake of children.
