I just learnt from a friend that ESF no longer taught traditional Chinese, not even in Primary or Secondary.  Anyone can confirm this? Many thanks.

ESF teach in simplified Chinese, using textbook from Singapore.
Chinese class is divided into 4 pathways, usually kids with Cantonese/Mandarin as the native language will be in the highest pathway.

In primary, I think the Chinese level is around 2 years gap from local school. For example, Year 4 Chinese in ESF is kind of similar difficulty as Year 1 in local school.

So in this case even if my kid is in the highest pathway, she will still be taught in Simplified Chinese, right?

RC (Renaissance College) is the only school under the ESF umbrella that teach Traditional Chinese characters.

What's wrong with simplified Chinese? When I studied in Australia, I learned simplified Chinese characters. It's much easier and more practical. We have chosen ESF as it teaches simplified Chinese.

The Chinese level of ESF is higher than what I expected. My boy in Y7 (equivalent to Primary 6 at local school) in the highest Chinese pathway. They are required to write descriptive essays with at least 400 characters, some can write essays with 600+. My boy recognises most traditional characters and can write some simple as well. We never taught him that, he just picked up on the way.

Thanks Jane for your advice.

I used to think that Traditional Chinese was better but with an open mind, I start to question if Simplified Chinese is more benefitial to students (not just IS students) as they can learn and write the Chinese characters much quicker. It may especially the case in exam when candidates need to write the answers quickly. Happy to hear more views on this.

The simplified Chinese characters I was told created by chairman Mao, aiming to teach a big bunch of peasants in a much quicker time because like you said they are easier to learn and write. The needed that so they could educate millions of people without education.
I agree it's good to learn simplified Chinese in order to write quickly especially notes and exams. However I don't believe they should replace traditional chinese characters as most of the simplified characters have totally lost their meaning. If we lose that we lose part of our culture!
