My friend's friend, worried about not getting a Y1 in ESF for 2016, decided to forge out $500k for the NR, and queued up very early on Sept 3 (before dawn i was told), only to find out even by the time the gate opens at 10am, only 30 odd people queued up for 150 seats.
See how difficult to get funding for ESF, and we should all expect out of proportion increase in fees in future years.
It is because unless you are applying for Yr 1 or 7 for 2014 Aug, there is no need to queue up on 3 Sept. You can always submit forms anytime in the year. So there were fewer people queuing up than last year.

I'm still surprised, given competition is indeed so keen these few years. I wouldn't be able to afford it myself, but I'm sure there are many parents who do.
May I know the 150 NRs are for all the ESF primary and secondary including the 2 private independent schools OR each ESF school issues 150NRs every year?
I heard the NR for the private independent schools costs $400K or am I outdated with the information?
500k of 150 quota is just for ESF school. RC and DC are 400k.
If 500k is not a financial burden to you then it is worthwhile to try this shortcut in case you don't have siblings or other priority.
I applied the NR by post last year. I don't see any reason to line up the queue.
ESF is eager for funding and parents please consider that the tuition fee will rise to match or even higher than ISF and CDNIS if you measure from the IBDP result point of view.
