Re: Please share: Worried about their Chinese level?

Why you believe that it is difficult to survive in HK without the ability to ready and speak Chinese?  I see the opposite.  In my company, people can survive very well with only English but cannot without good English.  Chinese is not used at all in our company. English is the standard English we used across countries. By the way, my company is an international company.

Besides, I don't worry about spoken Cantonese as my daughter will have a lot of chance to speak Cantonese in the family.  Concerning Chinese writting, I also have doubt on it.  Obviously addtional effort is required.  Besides, I expect (may be I am wrong), they will have ever better spoken Mandarine than students of local school.

Re: Please share: Worried about their Chinese level?

I have similar thought as SYMAMI3.  In fact, from what I observe from my ABC cousins, as long as you speak Chinese at home, your child will be able to speak and understand Chinese.  Of course, writting is a little tough but if I could only pick among Chinese or English, I would prefer English.  I think that is the reason why I want to send my child to an international school.

Re: Please share: Worried about their Chinese level?

To me,
English is the most important language even
living in a city like Hong Kong(poor English standard compared to some other Asian cities)

i plan to teach my son reading and writing Chinese myself if he can go to international school

i do not think local,
i think international,
therefore English is the best way

As we are Hong Kong people, both English and Chinese are very important for my child.

Re: Please share: Worried about their Chinese level?

I'm more concerned about my child not being able to speak and write English fluently.  I believe living in a Chinese environment like HK, the child will be able to pick up Cantonese without much problem.  I just have to put in more effort in teaching the Chinese written skills which is not easy even for students attending local schools.

Furthermore, I found that International Schools environment allows children to learn in a more relaxed and creative way, and being able to think analytically because information is not fed/stuffed to the kids.  So I prefer sending my child to I.S.

Just my two cents...  :

Re: Please share: Worried about their Chinese level?

Chinese is definitely important to Hong Kong people and our next generation.  Do you know how big the potential and opportunity related to China after 10~15 years?  Actually, it is already very imperative for nowadays communication.  Being our mother language, we have got an excellent opportunity to learn good Chinese. So why abandon it?

Moreover, I don’t think learning fluent Chinese is easy.  Many local Hong Kong Students, who attended Chinese classes daily, still cannot get a reasonable standard in reading and writing.

International school provides only very limited exposure to Chinese.

I believe education towards biliteracy and trilingualism.

Re: Please share: Worried about their Chinese level?

stccmc 寫道:

......(2) 雙語及活動教學化的本地學校, 例如維記, 陳守仁, 真道...

令我想起張學友及羅美微....

stccma,

Re: Please share: Worried about their Chinese level?

I don't think any mom here looks down upon Chinese.  If so, we don't have to teach our children Chinese or arrange Chinese classes for our kids.  In fact, I do think all of us want our children to be bilingual.  The issue is how can that be achieved and how good you want your children at both languages.

From my point of views, local school children do have better Chinese than international school children.  Unfortunately, since good secondary schools are taught in English, it is very difficult for their Chinese to be very good as well.  I attended local schools but I don't find my Chinese is good.  Unfortunately, my English is not good either.  My believe is that I don't have to worry about my child's English if she goes to an international school.  Then, at least, I don't have to worry about two languages.  I can focus my time and effort in enhancing her ability on Chinese only.  Since we are living in a Chinese environment, it is a lot easier to motivate my child to learn Chinese in leisure.

my 2 cents

Re: Please share: Worried about their Chinese level?

wcllks,

Absolutely agreed with you!

stccmc,

I also think that Chinese and English are also important for HK people, so it doesn't mean that if we choose International school for my child, we give up Chinese learning and also Chinese culture. The reason for Cheryl to open this forum is, she also think that Chinese is important and she wants to know how she can help her child to improve Chinese.

Re: Please share: Worried about their Chinese level?

Chinese or English

Just for knowledge purpose,
not for making money.

i like English more,
because English is an International language

The books i like to read are all written in English only. My knowledge would be limited if i can read Chinese books only.

"The books i like to read are all written in English only. My knowledge would be limited if i can read Chinese books only."   vice versa!  Why good command of English means poor Chinese?
