Chinese International School

I went to the Reception Class introduction session this morning and found that the school isn't as impressive as I had imagined.

The school staff who did the presentation gave me a feeling that they were investment managers trying to sell me a fund that they managed. The School Principal is new and this adds uncertainty.  The school campus is a bit crowded and the school tour is not well organised.  The students who tour us around do not speak good English and the student population is mainly Chinese.  Most  of the Chinese teachers I saw this morning are from Taiwan (I can tell from their way that they speak, they are indeed very local Taiwan style).

If one's child is accepted, you have to accept the place  without knowing that he/she will be placed in a.m. or p.m. session.  The school will decide for you.

I know CIS is very hard to get into and the corporate debenture costs  more than $1 million.  I had always aimed CIS as the target school for my daughter who is now at pre-reception of CDNIS, but after this visit and comparing the school fees, I will think twice even if my daughter can luckily get a place.

Re: Chinese International School

Hi Vinna,

I have a 1 yr old daughter, and I am also considering CIS and CDNIS.

What do you think about CDNIS, would you let your daughter stay there after the not-so-impressive CIS experience?  Is there anything -ve about CDNIS that caused you to consider a transfer?

I also heard that CIS is very difficult to get into.  Any insight on which kindergarten/nursery gives the kid a little advantage to get accepted?

Regards,

Mrs Buffy

Re: Chinese International School

Hi vinna ,

CIS is my target school for chldren too.
I will go to another introduction session which will be held in Jan.

The students who tour us around do not speak good English and the student population is mainly Chinese.
- I have met a few CIS students and found that they can speak fluent English. Students among themselevs also talk to each other in English too, even outside classroom. But i am not sure whether they can speak fluent mandarin too.

The corporate debenture costs more than $1 million?
What you refer is the Corporate Nomination Right, right?

I visited the CIS's website last year and found that it costs only 600,00. It is not raised up to 1 million?
Are they also returnable when students leave the school ?

Any other fees after this? such as reservation fees. It also indiciated in the website that 'a total sum of HK$15,000 is required to secure a student's place.'

Hi Mrs_Buffy ,

Only known from others that many of their students come from Tutor Time in Tai Tam.

Re: Chinese International School

SaBB

I understand that CIS is not issuing any CNR in the meantime.  The last tranch they issued were during SARS in 2003 and all were purchased swiftly by coporations like HSBC.

One could buy CNR in the 2nd hand market through agents.  I 've got an offer  to sell at HK$1.12 or $1.15 million (inclusive of transfer fee)a few months ago.  Now I think is around HK$1.35 million.  You cannot use a shell company to hold the CNR, the company has to meet the approval of CIS.  According to the agent, it shall either be a listed company in Hong Kong  or a company with substantial business. The agent will handle the paperwork with the school and what you need to do is to supply financial statements and prospectus of your company to the agent.

I understand that CIS has recently changed their wesite substantially.  In their old website, they have made it clear that all CNR have been sold out.  I do not know whether this new headmaster from France will bring any new policy to the school, e.g. issue more CNR??  Perhaps you may wish to phone the school to clarify.

As there is a 2nd hand market, no one will redeem their CNR from school and recieve the face value at issuance (face value various depending when it was issued).  Some people consider it as an investment vechicle.

Mind you, I know a couple of people that even they have CNR , their children were not accepted and vice versa.

I hope you will have better experience in your Jan visit.  I am very very disappointed today.

Re: Chinese International School

Hi vinna,

What about the teachers there?  My friend's daughters and sons are also studying in CIS. They are so happy to talk abt their school. Their parents also have good comments on it. To be honest, what I mostly care about is the quality of the teaching staff. I am looking for a school which can provide my children a loving and and caring atmosphere, and which can makes my children to be more interested in 'learning'. Did you have a chance to talk to the teachers?
So, What kinds of school are you actually looking for? Would you mind to share with us? What's your comments on CDNIS ?
Anymore comments about other int'l school? I am also going to apply HKIS.
regards,
SaBB

Re: Chinese International School

My opinions:

CIS -- Uk-based curriculum but starting to move to IB; more academic-oriented; heavier homework load compared with other IS; teachers look stern and the general atmosphere is a bit cold

CDNIS -- Ontario curriculum but also moving to IB; more emphasis on art, music and sports ; friendly atmosphere and students generally look happy; but heard that many students transfer to other IS (don't know why).

HKIS --  American curiculum; wide range of subject choice ; but be prepared that American-style schooling can be loose; a good place to go if you aim at US universities for your child; heard that students are quite divided, i.e. not much interaction between students of different background.

Re: Chinese International School

CIS used to prepare students for IGCSE, hence UK. But now moving towards IB at all levels.
