hi mommies of ESF TY kinder,

i'm aware that there was another topic on this kinder, but as i'm unable to access to it, i'm placing my question on this one.

after considering a few different options, i finally decided to enroll my daughter in ESF TY starting this september. we went there last thursday for the orientation for brand new kids. the brand new kids will start going to school formally from this week.

however, during the orientation, i got a little concered about the following issues:
1) our daughter's class teacher seems nice, but both assistants are not. they look indifferent to kids, and they don't hide their frustration, or even sigh, if the kids are not following their instruction properly. on the top of that, the assistants' english standard is very low, and with a strong accesent. i have no bias towards indian teachers, as our daughter's teachers at her play group were also indian. however, her previous teachers spoke fine english (and showed care towards kids) while assistants at the ESF TY do not. i'm concerned about this, as assistant are surely influential to kids as well, as kids won't distinguish who're "teachers" and who're "assistants".
2) as a result of the structure of the floor, you really can hear people in other classes speaking and singins whlie you're in your classroom, and it seems to make it harder for both the teacher and pupils to concentrate.

for these reasons, i don't feel very confident with this kinder at the moment. at the same time, i would prefer not to switch a school as it'll be a headache again (we've already bought school uniforms etc. and have declined offers from other kinders...).....

mommies of ESF kinder pupiles, can you share your opinion about this? based on your experience or based on what you've heard from others, do you think the school has some ways to manage the above mentioned problems?

Glad to know that you finally make up your mind.
Your daughter is my daughter's schoolmate now or even classmate. Which class is she in? upstairs or downstairs?
1) I observed the same as you, some of the educational assistants are not very nice, I think it really depends your luck. Last term in my daughter's class, one western EA is very cool but the other idian EA is very nice and caring, a parent of my daughter's classmate even thought my daughter is that idian EA's relative. But in fact I even don't know her.
2) I accompanied my daughter for the first day to school, I don't found it is a big problem. As everyone knows they should be quiet.

In fact, I found the philosophic of ESF kindy is very different from my daughter's former school, I don't feel comfortable at the very beginning. I feel a little bit better but still not confident enough whether my daughter could be benefit.

The worse thing is the school bus servise offered by Kwoon Chung, very bad routing, very bad customer's service.

How's your daughter today? Did you accompany her to school today?

good to talk with you again.
i went to see the class this morning and my concern has not changed much..... the assistants were a little bit better than the last week (i guess they were tired last week, as they had the orientation for brand new kids after they completed the AM & PM class.). however, i honestly do not feel the care / love from the EA for kids. the teacher is nice (we're downstairs, by the way), but honestly speaking, does not have the spark that make children so excited about the class. (the way she sings, talks etc. my daughter loves singing and can enjoy singing for a long time--more than one hour, easily. but today i saw her not really into even singing in a class--very unusual of her).

i also think they place too many toys everywhere, that destruct children's focus when they're supposed to focus on something else (e.g. story time, singing etc.) plus, so many children playing on the same floor at the same time... i did not feel relaxed myself being in that situation, so what's more for a child?

during the free play, the teachers seem busy ensuring that children follow the instruction (for example, "don't splash the water", "wait till there is extra space in the sand pit" etc.), and i did not get an impression that they place much emphasis on finding individuals' characteristics... am i being too negative?

the school bus was disppointing, too. the school mother was nice, but the bus was old and it took more than 40 minutes to get home while it was supposed to be around 20 minutes as per their prior schedule...

i'm seriously thinking of transferring our daughter to other school. it's not easy to do so as the term has already started, but i feel my child's love for school & activities may get lost

umm, i guess i shouldn't be too negative and continue observing till the end of the week....

Thanks all for sharing. I am seriously considering sending my daughter to ESF Tsing Yi for kindergarten. I understand that ESF may not be the best international school. However, there are not many choices in Tsing Yi.

Can you share is it difficult to get in ESF? Did the kids need to be fluent in English ?

hi there,
ESF kinder does not have an interview. You simply need to send an application form (and some other papers--please check with their administration for the details) and they will contact you several months before the term when your child is supposed to start. Most of the pupils are local people--I think there must be around 95% locals. For example, in our class there are only 3 non Chinese children (including our own child) out of 22 pupils. So I assume it's not difficult--unlike an ESF primary-- for children of only-chinese speaking family to be admitted to the kinder.

I hope this info helps. I might have sounded very negative about this kinder, but as each child has different needs and each parent has different expectation (for me, I wanted to see "spark" in the children's eyes during activities, so a kindergarten that can make that happen is a good kindergarten), please talk to parents of other ESF TY children as well, and see what you think.

Rikachandoll,

Kid might needs some time to get used to the new environment and the new faces, but also for the parents. Obersving more before you make the final decision.
You could express what you thought/ doubts to the class teacher via the communication book, or you could try to make an appointment with her, so try to talk to her to see what she could help in your issues.

How's your big daughter?
Have your little daughter being accepted by ESF Tsing Yi? When should she start?
Do you know any other school bus service for ESF Tsing Yi? Kwoon Chung really drive me crazy, my daughter took almost an hour to home now, but last term is about 45mins.

My friend's daughter also studying in ESF T.Y. Teacher has already told them that their daughter needs to improve her English...therefore, she is going to pay for tutorial on either weekend or weekdays (not sure). I think its a really TOO BAD news to parents and kids. But in fact, parents' culture (English) are not good, that's why their daughter is also not good to speak English.

I didnt see any "special" from his daughter, so I never recommend ESF to my other friends.

Will you consider KCIS??? It's in North Point which is a very good international school with professional Mandarin teaching etc...

If you want your kid can go to the ESF Primary school more easily, the ESF Kinders have definite advantage. See their admission rule for 2006 below

"3. CATEGORIES THAT DETERMINE INTERVIEW PRIORITY:

Category 1. First language English speaking students who cannot attend a local school because of insufficient grasp of Cantonese.
Category 2. Students whose first language is not English who cannot attend a local school because of insufficient grasp of Cantonese.
Category 3. Students with English as an additional language, who qualify to attend a local school.

Within each category priority will be given to students who:

have brothers or sisters already attending the school
are attending an ESF Educational Services kindergarten (for Y1 only)
are former students returning from a period overseas
have a parent who is a full time employee of the ESF
are the children of former students of the school. "

So the ESF kinders have the better chance to get into the ESF P1 subject to your kid's english standard is good.
