school.

Hi Jokey,

remember you said your child studied in YC and changed to ESF. Why local school now?

Jokey2828 & conniedodo,

Thanks a lot.  Would you mind telling me which local schools? Or which type of schools (traditional/ creative)? And do the kids feel difficult in local schools? Sorry, I ask so much but I'm really eager to know.

Hi wewangwang,

We thought that a local school would work better for her.

The international and local education systems have their own good and bad sides, and no one can say for sure which one is better than the other. It is by luck that my child had an option between the two. Honestly, the decision was by no means easy to make. I do hope that my choice was right.

Before I made up my mind on this important issue that had life-long significance on my child, I had considered the following:

(1)        What is an ideal learning environment for a child?
(2)        What do I want my child to learn at school?
(3)        Given her ability, personality and learning style, what learning environment suits her the best?

I think all parents hate spoon-feeding schools that overload students with tons of homework and never-ending tests or exams. We would like to see our children enjoy their school life. Nowadays, many DSS and private schools are driving towards this direction.

I understand that in a local school, it is difficult to achieve the "happy learning" objective because being a Band One or a Band Two student is a matter of going to either heaven or hell. To maintain a competitive edge over other students in the same grade, it is essential for them to maintain good school reports, win prizes in open competitions and obtain certificates in open examinations. To avoid this unpleasant learning environment, I found a perfect answer though - a through-train school.

Happy leaning is not tantamount to happy WITHOUT leaning. My ideal school is one that provides a liberal yet disciplined learning environment where children are free to explore and develop their potential to the full. Under the peer influence and teachers' guidance, they seek self-improvement and grow up to be confident, responsible members of society with independent thinking and a global perspective.

With the growing importance of Chinese in the new millennium, the learning of Chinese is indispensable. A tri-lingual bi-literate school is preferable. A heartful appreciation of Chinese culture and values is important too.

An international school works best for those curious, inquisitive children with high initiative. For passive children, a local school should be better. For an objective opinion on this, I gave my child a professional EQ test. Dr. said that she would adapt equally well in an international or a local school.

A decision was finally made. I turned down the offer for a place in ESF. Instead I asked the school to keep my child on the waiting list so that she would not lose her chance of admission in future. She then proceeded to K3 and applied for local schools. I then matched all the choices available to her against the above 3 questions before a selection was finally made.

Is there such an ideal local or international school? Please enlighten me.

A few new DSS or private schools use new approach similar to your thoughts above, which I am not sure if it really works.  They are in-between local and international schools, such as Logos, Pui Kiu, Yat Sun, PLK CKY, Victoria, etc.  What is your view on these schools? Have you chosen one of these?

In fact, Yew Chung is a pioneer of these, it is an international school for local kids, who learn both Chinese and English, and learn under a happy environment.  Do you think the result of Yew Chung's students is satisfactory?

Re: 耀中國際班vs 主流班

Hi WYmon,

Question: A few new DSS or private schools use new approach similar to your thoughts above, which I am not sure if it really works. They are in-between local and international schools, such as Logos, Pui Kiu, Yat Sun, PLK CKY, Victoria, etc. What is your view on these schools? Have you chosen one of these?

Answer:

Logos – I do not want to be a guinea pig.
Yat Sun – I know too little about this school.
PLK CKY – I am not sure of its standard.
Victoria – I would prefer Yew Chung to Victoria.

Question: In fact, Yew Chung is a pioneer of these, it is an international school for local kids, who learn both Chinese and English, and learn under a happy environment. Do you think the result of Yew Chung's students is satisfactory?

Answer: You know my child is from Yew Chung. In my opinion, it is definitely a good school, in particular it offers IB diploma course and is on a through-train to Barclay University. Yet as I heard from my friends who send their children to YC, the students' performance varies a lot. And given the high school fee it charges, may be there are some better choices.

Hi Jokey,

Can you introduce more about the EQ test. Can you pm to me who is the doctor and how much does it charge.

Is Y.C on a through-train to Barclay University. I never heard of it.

Re: 耀中國際班vs 主流班

Hi wewangwang,

I heard from Yew Chung 2 years ago that the School was affiliated with (I think it should be) Warwick University (sorry for the mistake), and would accept all Yew Chung students. This news was reported in newspaper at that time.

I just tried to find out this piece of information from Yew Chung's website, but was unable to find this. Was there a change of affiliation? Can other YC parents confirm this or correct me?
