Re: Japanese International School (Tai Po)

Yes, we live in MOS.  According to Ms Miyajima, even back to MOS, it may take 45 min.... She wasn't sure about how long each bus needs to take but said that it's likely more than half hour and as is the case with the morning trip as I happened to ask her this afternoon....

Re: Japanese International School (Tai Po)

Well, 45 min sounds really long.  I can see the local primary next to JIS just from our living room...

In geobaby.com a parent living in gold coast said that her daughter gets picked up at 7.15 and will arrive at 8.00.

Are you going to be a JIS parent?  I believe that you have been an ICS parent...

Re: Japanese International School (Tai Po)

Some parents in Japanese Section said it only takes 30 min. from TST area to JIS....
I assume that when children need to travel to JIS far from Kln or HK side, it may take even shorter for them to get there as the buses use highway. Well, it all depends on how many kids in which area come to JIS.

Yes, I am currently and "more likely for next school year" an ICS mom, and I can also be a JIS mom, if I really wish to....
But I'm still swaying in between, maybe till the end of next week. In fact, we've thought the world of JIS for quite some time. We still want to send our child to P1 at the latest. If only JIS reception was a half-day, I would definitely join your band by now.
As I've seen some concerns arising about ICS, I don't feel 100% happy to stay at ICS for K2 as we first planned, then move to JIS. My child will turn 4 in a few months but it seems that it will be a big challenge for my child to move to a full-day school, like handling lunch and staying awake after a meal....
How is your child? Do you have any concern for your child like mine??? I know this may not be the big thing and they'll soon grow out of it. But I still can't give my child a go....

Re: Japanese International School (Tai Po)

I understand your concern.  Yes, a full-day school is demanding and we also have a feeling that our girl will start her primary school life one year earlier.  Afternoon nap probably is not a problem, but, yes, lunch is going to be our daily headache!  I can also foresee changes in our daily life because she has to wake up much earlier than she does now.  However, when others can manage, why we can't?

Re: Japanese International School (Tai Po)

It surely depends on a child and how they are growing, not only emotionally but also physically. In fact, after lunch time, some children do take a nap in the class, while others are reading. With this regard, the school and the teacher are very accommodating. And I can easily anticipate how my child will spend this time if the teacher says, "you can either take a nap or read books." My girl will do choose to read a book, or may do some other play. Then, as a result, she'll be sleepy in the next class....:cry::cry: This is just one thing I can draw from her typical behavioral patterns. If she is not able to build a sound meal and sleep pattern, she'll go fussy and can't get her things done well. The worst comes to worst, she won't be able to enjoy the school.
Yes, she will try hard to get by if I just throw her in, but is that getting along with her growth? It may be just a few months which makes the difference, but it is still a big time for her. We will keep an eye on this and want to move her when she's ready!

"My girl will do choose to read a book, or may do some other play. Then, as a result, she'll be sleepy in the next class....''

It is a very good point.  I may be luckier in this aspect because my girl can give up her nap time if she is engaged in an interesting activity.  What I anticipate, or hope, is that she is not trying hard to get by but adapting gradually and naturally.

Meal...well, I'm not quite sure.  My girl probably won't eat much at school but she doesn't eat much now anyway.

Re: Japanese International School (Tai Po)

Dear Fattymom,

My son attended an interview in early May and got accepted for Reception Class this August.  The interview was personally conducted by Mr. M, the Principal.  He is a nice guy.  I've asked another mom and she said most interviews are similar.  Parents will just sit next to the kid.  The questions are not that difficult, sth like, what's your age and can you write a number (usually the kid's age).  Then, he will show the kid a book and ask questions regarding the pictures in the book e.g. what is the dog doing ? answers like : reading a book, getting juice from the refrigerator, milking cow...etc.  Then, Mr. M will tour around the school with the kid, holding his hand and keep talking with him.  He will also talk a bit with the parents.  The whole atmosphere is very good, provided that the kid can really talk to him and understand what he said.

Hope that would help.

Re: Japanese International School (Tai Po)

Quentin0227,

I also like JIS a lot!  I've heard that a lot of graduates from Nature Education Kindergarten got accepted to JIS.  The two schools are very close to each other and I think they have good relationship.  There are quite a number of Japanese kids studing at Nature, so I think it will be a good choice to start with.  They have N1 class open for 2 yr old.  The coming open day is Dec 2 and you should seek more advice from the principal.

Re: Japanese International School (Tai Po)

momoki,

Thanks for your reply. Does Nature have a website so that I could check out with it? The coming open is it for Nature or JIS? Thanks.

How old is your kid?

Re: Japanese International School (Tai Po)

momoki,

as JIS has two streams, namely Japanese and Int'l, some Japanese did join JIS but Japanese stream.   for 2006, there are several (not "alot" as mentioned) Nature students (local students) joined JIS' int'l stream and some joined Shatin Junior. yes, i do agree Nature is a good stepping stone to JIS
