Vocabularies in the story book

My daughter is studying P2 in ESF. Every week , she will borrow two story books from the school. Usually, she loves to read these books. However, I found that she does not know the meaning of ALL the words in the story books. These vocabularies are quite difficult or uncommon to me. I even need to dig out the exact meaning from the dictionary.

On the other hand, my daughter can roughly understand and enjoy the stories in whole even some of the words she don't know. My daughter don't care about these difficult word and just go on reading the storybook and enjoy it.

Do I still need to explain these vocabularies to my daughter ? e.g squiggly, thicket, stampede & etc

Or my english is too bad, these vocabularies are easy.

How about your kids ?

To dig out the meaning of every word is quite timing consuming as I firstly need to read through the story books.

Please advise and help !

Re: Vocabularies in the story book

Do you remember the time we learn reading Chinese newspaper? I cannot recall any time I need a Chinese dictionary. I think it is possible to let her read on without interrupt and she will pick it up through the context if that vocabulary appear quite frequently. As long as she has interest on reading English materials, she will be fine. Interrupting may just kill her interest.

Re: Vocabularies in the story book

Yes, no need to know every word unless that is a very key word which is necessary for understanding the rest of the story.  It is more important to grasp the essence of the stories.

Re: Vocabularies in the story book

I always use an electronic dictionary because  it is quick.  The interruption is kept to the minimum.

Teachers always accuse the use of electronic dictionary, I think electronic dictionary is their worst enemy.

Regards.

Re: Vocabularies in the story book

My girl is now 5 years old.  I usually go through every story book that I am giving my girl one night earlier.  I write down the vocabularies on a piece of paper/notebook and find out the meaning from dictionary (both in English and Chinese).  In this way, I make sure the explanation is correct.

Sometimes we read books and check dictionary together.  I believe this is a good habit, especially when they are still small.

She can read long story books (about 60-70 pages) now.  She can grasp the essence of the stories even though there are some unknown vocabularies.

How do you think?

Re: Vocabularies in the story book

I agree with CherylMum and WYmom.  To have the interest in reading is more important.  It will demotivate children's interest in reading if you keep digging the meaning of each word.  The more varieties of book the children read, the more voca they can learn.

Re: Vocabularies in the story book

Agree.  While we should not interrupt the kids when they are reading, I also agree we have to stimulate them for checking up the dictionary to build up the vocab. ,esp for primary students.  They will remember the words more when they check up the correct meaning and be able to understand the words when they appear in other story books.  These vocabs could be used in their own writing as well. :
