Re: Tell me something about Renaissance College

My husband went to the information day of RC on last Saturday.  As Ruby mentioned the principle and staff are very nice. Those students representative looked smart and they love school life very much.

Before the information day,  I worried about the disicipline of student in RC.  My husband talked to one of the eldest student and knew that disicipline is also important at RC. RC make a balance between freedom and disicipline.

Even though the ratio of local student will high up to 70% but I don't mind. I agreed with Ruby opinion. A balance between English and Chinese is essential.  My husband and I have apply RC.
Can you tell me more about the interview, Ruby?  Thanks a lot.

Re: Tell me something about Renaissance College

amandalyy,

Sorry for the late reply.

In fact, for the Chinese lesson in P.1 (and probably P.2 also), they will use both Cantonese and Mandarin. As many students might not have a Mandarin background. The teacher is bilingual in both Cantonese and Mandarin. While for the upper forms, I'm not sure if those are native Mandarin speaking teachers or not. You can by all means ask the school directly, the staffs are very nice.
I just went to the parent-teacher meeting this morning and talked to both the class teacher and Chinese teacher. The P.1 Chinese teacher is very nice ! Very patient and organized, shows a good interest in her teaching.  My son loves her very much and after studying in Phoenix, he really forstered an interest in Chinese, both writing and singing Mandarin songs. I'd asked her and she said that she will stay with the school after moving to Ma On Shan.

Re: Tell me something about Renaissance College

alphamom,

Sorry I don't have much information about the interview. Cos' my son did not tell me about it. But I feel that the interview is not difficult, as long as your kid is fluent in English and willing to speak up. It's not going to be any harder than the other international schools. Especially now that they are hungry for new students to fill in their new campus. Honestly (and sadly for them), RC might not be a hot choice for HK parents, most of they would prefer ESF schools over RC.

I talked to my son's class teacher this morning. She said the school believes that the kids should not give up their mother tongue (Cantonese) while learning other languages (English, Mandarin). Therefore, the laungauge policy of the school is, if the kids are with a group with Cantonese as the mother tongue, they are allowed to speak in Cantonese. But when there are people who cannot speak Cantonese in the group, e.g. their class teacher, they have to speak in English. While, the formal correspondences of the school are all in English.

So, I have no doubt that they would still develop sufficient level of English both in terms of oral, reading and writing.

I'm happy with this school and I would really encourage you to give it a try.

Re: Tell me something about Renaissance College

Dear Ruby
Thanks for your useful information.
I don't want my son to give up Cantonese cause once you live in H.K., you must know Cantonese. Right?  In fact, I like the cirriculum of this school that's why I will let my son to try RC. Hope that my son can pass the interview.

Renaissance College Interiew

I have received a date for an Interview for Renaissance College (P1 Sept 2006) in the middle of February.

Any other parents out there have had the interview?

I believe this is going to be a very good school. It will have a reasonably high standard in English and Chinese, new and morden facilities, and an internationally recognized IB curriculum. (Recognized by UK Oxford and Cambridge University)

The principal, Mr Kenny, is the ex-IB co-ordinator for the Asia-Pacific area and I am confident that he will lead the school to become a very good IB all-through school.

For those of you who don't know much about IB, you should read more about it. It is well accepted by all the prestigious universities, as well as local HKU and CU.
