Re: KCIS - Kiangsu & Chekiang International Section

hi Harrah:

My daughter is only 1 year old and she will be starting school in 2008.  I started doing research on schools and thought I should see the school and whether the students are happy, so I paid a visit.  The kids in the K1 and K2 classes all looked so happy, so I have pretty much made up my mind that I would put her in KCIS.

I myself went to one of those so-called elite local schools, but was told by friends about the loads of homework that local schools give nowadays.  So I started researching on international schools.  Problem is, being Chinese myself I wanna find a school that is a bit more balanced in terms of Chinese/english language / homework / discipline.  I think going by these criteria I really only have 3 choices - CIS, SIS and KCIS.  Daughter of a good friend of mine goes to CIS, she was telling me about how most of the kids are really rich, I mean living in houses at the Peak rich. SIS does not have an affiliated secondary school.  So I guess on balance KCIS would be the best, plus the tuition fee and lack of debeture requirement is not as ridiculous as some.  Your views?

Re: KCIS - Kiangsu & Chekiang International Section

I know SIS will soon have its secondary section but don't know the exact date.  However, I consider that the curriculum and workload of SIS are rather tough and only simplified chinese is taught, so I prefer KCIS.  In terms of tuition fee, KCIS is indeed reasonable and value for money.  I think most of the KCIS students are from middle class families instead of those very well-off ones.

Re: KCIS - Kiangsu & Chekiang International Section

tumtum,

you are so well plan for your child.  When my son was K.1, i still didn't think of his primary school so i suffer a lot for this process and worry for the whole year since he is at K. 3.

My son is study at KCIS - P. 2 several weeks.  so far he likes the school.  i agreed with you that KCIS can balance the Chinese and English.  The school fee and entrance fee etc. is acceptable.  If you still have time, i suggest you can also search for PLK CKY, i think this school can also balance the Chinese and English and the curriculum is close to HK's school.
i'm a little bit worry about the Math's curriculum, after the observation, the curriculum of Math is not close to HK's school.

Hurrah,

Will you let your kid continue study at KCIS for P. 2?

Re: KCIS - Kiangsu & Chekiang International Section

lamsuetwai,

How's your son doing? Does he get along well with the classmate?  My kid will most probably continue his study in KCIS P2.
For P1 students, the Christmas performance is just a small function held at school and we don't need to buy any ticket.  I think the SCMP fund raising activity is not compulsory and the teacher had sent out a slip recently asking us to buy the book made by the student and the money will go to the SCMP and the school for its development, like buying library books.

Re: KCIS - Kiangsu & Chekiang International Section

By the way a friend told me that the environment at KCIS is quite bad, i.e. the campus is very old and even the washrooms are not very clean.  That was the reason why my friend chose Canadian IS instead.  Any comments?

Re: KCIS - Kiangsu & Chekiang International Section

Hi, MickeyBall,

thanks so much for your feedbacks. May I ask for more info?

first of alls, I'm not a big fans of "5-star" school environment ( I mean facilities / campus).  Frankly speaking, I myself came from "root-level" and I'm happy with any comfortable and good hygeine school environment for my girl. The most important things are syllabus, language environment, the teachers and the way they teach -
kids to be implanted of learning initiatives,
passion to explore knowledge,
brave to face and overcome difficulties,
good personality to work with others.

Mickeyball, may I ask how old is your kid and how long has your kid studied in KCIS? How would you comment on your kids' Chinese / English profinency? Is your kid happy in studying in this school? How would you comment on the school management and the teachers' quality? Sorry, may be too many questions.

Mickeyball 寫道:
Of course the environment cannot be compared with ESF, but so far my son enjoys there very much. Teachers are patient and nice towards kids. And the language environment there is good for both English and Mandarin.

Re: KCIS - Kiangsu & Chekiang International Section

My baby is only 1 now but I am also looking at his schooling options in HK.  I am very happy about the comments from parents of KCIS so KCIS will definitely be my first preference when he gets to school age.   Actually when will that be for KCIS?  He was born in 2006.  I am quite confused with the terms pre nursery, nursery etc.  Please offer some advice!

While I am here, I just want to add my two cents worth.  My hubbie, brother and sisters in law went to KCS and I think they have all turned out ok ie morally and legally abiding citizens.  Therefore I wouldn't worry to much about the negative comments of current KCS students.  I think as parents we must remember it is not the school that will 100% shape our kids, it is what is taught at home!

Re: KCIS - Kiangsu & Chekiang International Section

another question that mickeyball or any other KCIS parents might help is: what is the student mix and class size for the kidnergarten in KCIS? I mean, the ratio between pupil to teacher? and the approximate ratio of local to non-local students.

thx.

monkeymei.

Re: KCIS - Kiangsu & Chekiang International Section

Mosy:

You can submit your application for your kid now, I put in mine when my daughter was also 1 year old.

My understanding is that pre-nurseries are basically playgroups, for kids between 1.8 months - 2.8/3 yrs, then nursery is 2.8/3 to 4, after that it's kindergarten.  I have applied for the Victoria pre-nursery for my daughter and when she starts school in Sept she will be 1 year 9 months old.
