Re: Which international kindergarten can accept students age to 2 years 8 months

Dear Cherylmum,
Although the ESF IB curriculum is accepted worldwide, I think it is still essential for all students to take American History, Civics and Healthy and Safety before university entry.  Of course you can take these after you get into college, but I think it will be a waste of time (probably another quarter/semester).  Also, for US system, kids need to take math on "schedule".  Algebra I in grade 9, trigonometry in grade 10, Algebra II in grade 11, Pre-Calculas in Grade 12.  For many American students, they sometimes study AP Calculas in Grade 12 already...meaning their AP credit/unit can be counted as University units.  I experienced all these, I didn't need to take Physics, Chemistry and Biology in my British system International school back then (i am not sure if it is still the case now), but in the states, these are the must-takes.  You are supposed to take Biology in grade 9, chemistry in grade 10, and Physics in grade 11, sometimes AP physics in grade 12.  When you fill out the application form for University, you are asked to state which year did you take these subjects.  Since I haven't took those, it was such a headache for me at that time.  That's why I personally think that having your kids switched in high school is quite important if you are planning to send them to the states for University.
Hope this helps.

Re: Which international kindergarten can accept students age to 2 years 8 months

Dear lenglengma and luluonthemoon,

Thanks very much for your suggestions. I want to ask PG1 is same as which grade of HK local school? How many years of Kindergarten, Primary and Secondary?

My friend's son was born on 22 Sept 2004 and one on 4 Nov 2004. Which year will they go to Kindergarten? If from Anfield finish K1 change to ICS, school will consider finish K1 then go to K2 or just think of age?

I want my son finish Year 10 then go aboard. When is debenture refund? You mean I have to pay debenture each year once or pay once begin school then wait to G12 to refund?

Thanks very much for all of your sharing.

Why no one answer my questions?

Re: Which international kindergarten can accept students age to 2 years 8 months

Yannass,

Pre-Grade 1 at ICS is for 5 years old. So it doesn't seem to be applicable to a local school system. As I've heard from other parents, it was a part of the kindergarten, but now it looks like a part of the primary section. PG1 is full-day, while R1 and R2 are half-day. Primary section is from PG1 to Grade 5, Secondary section is from G6 to G12.

For your friends' sons, both of them will start R1 in Aug. 2008 (because ICS school year normally starts in Aug) providing the school won't change the age criterion by then. The children have to be 3 years old by the end of Aug. in the relevant school year. Like some of my child's classmates, they just turned 4 in Sept. and Oct. but still in R1. Also, I don't think they care much if a child has finished K1 in other schools. What they teach is different anyway.

I know students are always moving in and out especially in international schools. If you do have a plan to send your child overseas later, you should do discuss it with the school about the refund of the Debenture. They may pay you back a full amount if the vacancy given by your child is filled up by someone else paying the Debenture. But I am not really sure about the individual case. In fact, this is one of the concerns that many ICS parents have at the moment....

Re: Which international kindergarten can accept students age to 2 years 8 months

Hi Yannass:

Let me try to answer some of your questions.

1. PG1(P1)=Pre Grade 1 = K3 in local school

2. Kindergarten 2 years (R1 - R2)
    Primary 6 years (P1 - Grade 5)
    Secondary 7 years (Grade 6 - Grade 12)

3.  From what I understand, ICS is strick about what age goes to what grade.  The cut off date is Aug. 31.  If the kid's birthday is after Aug. 31, he or she will need to go to the lower level.

4.  You pay debenture only once.  If you decide to leave  school before G12, and if somebody is waiting to enter ICS, you can get your money back right away; otherwise you may need to wait for a period of no longer than 4months before you get the refund.  Keep in mind, this is just the proposal the school is considering right now.

Hope this is helpful.

Re: Which international kindergarten can accept students age to 2 years 8 months

smallfat,

ICS is located in FoTan, NT. It's just near KCR station. The school doesn't apply IB, but they follow the US based curriculum (US Western Association of Schools and Colleges).

Hi Yannass:

I don't really know much about IB.  I heard about it when I attended CKY's information session.

Re: Which international kindergarten can accept students age to 2 years 8 months

luluonthemoon & Cherylmum,

Thanks for your advice.  I've browsed the learning objectives of K2 & PG1 of ICS.  Seems to me that my daughter will have quite a lot to work on.  I found that she has started "writing" on her own.  She was trying to write some capital letters and when she wrote "F???D????", she told me it was "Friday".  I'll need to get those books that she can trace the letters to help her learn to write.

Re: Which international kindergarten can accept students age to 2 years 8 months

Thanks Cherylmum,

You sure are very resourceful.  Not until you mentioned, I never noticed there're different kinds of writing. I thought all kids learn the manuscript print to start.
