HELP ! Reading (ESF)

Thanks a lot ! Let me find a forum taking about the ESF school.

My son is studying in Kowloon Junior School P1. However, his English Reading is not good. In the recent assessment, his reading level is only level 6. I know that only two students at this level in his class. All of the others are at level 12 and above. Some of smart boys even at  level 20. My boy feels very unhappy about it as he is the worst in English Reading and so as the group assigned. In this few weeks , he always ask why he can't read the level 12 story book. He even cries for this reason in the home. I have talked about this to his teacher. However, the teacher said that P.1 student with level 6 reading skill is a bit poor but acceptable.

Dear Moms, please help me ! I beg for yuor help !
How can I help my child with reading ? Any suggestion will help ! I would like to bring back my kid's reading level to the average like level 12.  What can I do ?

Thanks a lot in advance for your assistance.

Re: HELP ! Reading (ESF)

May I know which reading system you are referring to?  Is it Oxford Reading Tree?

Re: HELP ! Reading (ESF)

My son is with BHS, last year, their English teacher hosted a seminar on 'guided reading' to parents and helpers, it's really useful. After that, I learned how to read with my son and his reading level suddenly jumped from 7 to 11 or 12 within 2 weeks.

You can ask the English teacher(not class teacher) for more information. From what I know, level 10 - 13 is the norm for students completed P.1.
But I know in my son's class, some children are still on level 6 or 7. Don't worry, your son may be weak in reading but he may be strong in other area. The most important thing is to build up your son's confidence. He'll catch up!

Re: HELP ! Reading (ESF)

Is he ok in other aspects except reading?

No short-cut but keeps reading with him to build up his vocabulary base.  Has he learnt Phonics before to help?

To WYmom,

Reading level - not the Oxford one.

Re: HELP ! Reading (ESF)

It should be a English reading system from Australia. The level is separated from 1 to 24. Does your kid study in ESF School ?

Re: HELP ! Reading (ESF)

Dear wbmom,

Thanks a lot for your quick response !

In Kowloon Junior School, we only has one teacher and one assistant for each class. The class teacher is also the English teacher. I have already talked to this teacher about the situation. However, no suggestion is given.

What a great news !
You son can junp from level 7 to level 12 in two weeks. I am sure that I have used wrong method to read the book with my son.

Dear wbmom, may I beg your help for telling me some information about the "guided reading" or simply fax me the materials used in the said seminar.

Million thanks for your kind assistance in advance !

Re: HELP ! Reading (ESF)

Dear  502,

Thanks a lot for your suggestion.

I think my son is OK in other aspects. He is learning paino, so far so good. He can follow with the teacher. Regarding his Maths, he is in the 3rd group in his class. As the class is separated into five groups, I think he is at the average.

Re: HELP ! Reading (ESF)

eng888,
as you sounds so worry about how to improve your son's reading standard.  well, no offence and please dont get me wrong, would your son have any difficulty reading?  If so, is it serious?  I believe we should find a way for him when he is still young.  If required, please visit this site, http://dyslexia.org.hk/aboutus.html.
I just want to help and no offence to your son and your goodself.
hugs and kisses to your son.

Re: HELP ! Reading (ESF)

eng888,

Before I used the guided reading approach, my son's English was already very good, he could read very well and understand every words. However, that didn't mean he understood the story fully. That's why he stayed in level 7 for a long time.

I can't find the material at the moment, but the basic idea is to let your son fully understands the story. For example, you should ask him questions about the story, why did the character do this, what do you think he will do next etc. What would your son do if he is the character. In the end, you can ask him to tell you the story in his own way.

Re: HELP ! Reading (ESF)

wbmom,

Bingo!  My son is also is BHS P.1.  His class teacher told me last parents day how to help the kids to read the story book.  What she said is exact what you said.  eng888, you can try this.  I think it is no need to worry about their reading level.

In my son's class, they have 5 different reading groups, my son is the 2nd highest and he is in level 11 now.  My son knows how to read every word in the book.  He is read by himself.  He reads for me.

wbmom, please check PM

Re: HELP ! Reading (ESF)

Hi there,

My daughter is studying kindergarten in Australia.  The teacher tested her reading is more than level 20 and her understanding is about level13.  However, the teacher only gave her home reading book level 8.  I asked the teacher for the reason.  The teacher told me she wished my daughter understand the hidden meaning of each word. Kids can read well doesn't means s/he can understand the hidden meaning of each word.  Once their foundation is good and they can get through it, everything will be very fast. My daughter complained the reading was too easy for her at that time.  Then I asked her to explain each word of hidden meaning to me and also asked her to spelling the often used words.  Last week, the teacher jumped the level to 15.  I knew it was still very easy for her, but my daughter did not complain about it .  Because she needs to do more spelling than before...Ha Ha..

Tell you son, if he can do well in his level, the teacher may jump him to much higher level......

Re: HELP ! Reading (ESF)

eng888,

My suggestion:
1) Find the right topic that interests him.
2) Ask your son to re-tell the story and its meaning.
3) Phonics can help. I suppose KJS has phonics lessons as other ESF schools do.

I've been thru the same problem you're now facing.
My son is in P1. He paid no interests in reconizing words until 2 months ago, he suddenly jumped from level 5 to 9. He's now in level 12.

Ever since I started reading books to my then toddler son, I pointed at the words which I was reading but his eyes never follow my finger because they were caught by the beautiful pictures.

Not long ago, he showed his interests in science.  So I first bought him books about rocket & planets, ocean animals, weather change......etc for him to find out every tiny thing about his little world. I then bought some story books among these topics and asked him to read together.
Meanwhile, I taught him the basic phonics CVC words sound blending which encouraged him in sounding unseen simple words.

Thank God, it worked. I do believe it's a matter of right timing.

I'd  like to share with you some helpful links below.
