So who do you think your child will interact more in 10 years time? Americans or British or Australian? Scottish or New Yorkers or Victorians?

Does it matter to our discussion?

You may wonder how I know that.  Well, nobody can be 100% sure of his/her future.  However, it does not mean that we cannot make our plans.  We all are planning for the future and try to prepare for the future.  That's why we invest in insurance, education funds etc.

I think mothers here are all planning hard for their kids.  They have different plans due to their different abilities, experiences, and perspectives.  Therefore, they will send their children to different schools, which they think are the best in their own situations.  Given that, whether studying in IS is better than studying in LS really does not have a definite answer.

faye 寫道:

As for your second question, I don't think you can quantify how much more impressed these people are with British accent.  On a relative basis, assuming 2 Chinese persons with everything equal but the accent, the one who speaks English with a "preferred" accent is more impressive than the one who speaks it with a Hong Kong accent.

No 2-person is identical.

"referred' is too subjective.

You prefer British accent than no accent.  Some prefer DG Boys than 'ABC Girls' even they are gratuated from the same University.  Others just prefer people wear Polo than Bossini...

I prefer to hear something with 'contents' rather than accent.

But if it is an oral contest, you are right!

I am still thinking if I should put my baby to Int'l School. She will stay in HK until her 10 years old, then return to Canada.
I do not worry to her English level, but I insist that she has very good Chinese foundation. It is the reason I keep her in HK the first 10 years.

If I were you, I would send my daughter to a local school.  The reasons are as follows:

1) It is not easy to motivate her to speak Chinese after moving back to Canada.  Therefore, it would be good to use every chance you can have while you are in Hong Kong to let her have more exposure, especially in writing.

2) Although her English may not be as good as Int'l school students if she studies in a local school, she can pick it up in Canada since she is still small (only 10) when she moves back.

just my 2 cents

If one decides to join the local school, the war starts at the age of 2 to get into the "right" kindergaten, in order to secure a place in an "acceptable" primary school and then secondary....
The kids then have to struggle against endless homeworks, dictations, tests and exams, as well as projects nowadays. And they must get good grades.  The system is almost an all-or-nothing system.
I do not think that it is an education.
Of course, the above is just my personal opinion.

Dear JoiceMaMa,

If I were you, an international school with concentrated in Chinese is more suitable to you. Please bare in mind that LS and IS are totally different education systems.  It will be quite difficult for your children when they return back to Canada. Like my friend, immigrated to Canada when she was 11-12 years old.  Her tune, will not like a native and...

As I am Hong Kong people, therefore I sent my child to a IS with more chinese.

The school my child attends doesn't have much extra fee.

Dear JoiseMaMa,

You are welcome!  Hope you don't mind it's only our own opinions. It dosen't mean right or wrong. I enjoy so much to read all mothers' opinions.  It's so wonderful and can wider my thinking. Esp. for the topic of "accent", I haven't thought about it so deeply before.  I met a mother from Canada and paid $2000+/month to sent her daughter to attend a private tutorial to keep her tone. I don't understand at that time.

Dear Akinawong,

I am the same case as you and my daughter studies in IS now.

My daughter studies  2 years(2-3) in local Kinder and
2 years (4-6) in international Kinder then international primary.

The first thing you need to know which language would be used for the entry interview for your target school. Like my daughter's, you can choose either English or Mandarin. You will fail the interview if your child answers in any Cantonese.

yyyy ,
Thanks for your reply!
But would you tell me the name of IS & address?
Can the child adapt quickly from "local kinder" changed to "international kinder" ?
She need to talk fluently when interview. That means she can talk English or Mandarin when she is 4. Is it possible to train the child from now? My BB is now 2.5 years old!

Dear Akinawong,

During the interview, the kid no need to talk in fluent English or Madarin, simple word answer is accepted but must not in Cantonese.  Of course, the kid needs to understand the simple instruction asking by the foreign teachers (3-4 people) and do what they requested.

It's lucky that my child's K1 local kinder used foreigner to teach English.  She already got use to answer in English when someboby speaked in English.

I haven't trained her anything as I didn't plan to send her to IS at her 2-3 years old stage. My child was OK when changed to international kinder as everybody learned from the every beginning.  Her school will teach one whole day in English and one whole day in Mandarin. They can speak quite well after one year.

Dear yyyy,

I don't know much about Singapore Int'l School.

1. As education system in Singapore is somewhat like Hong Kong, the style is spoon-feeding with less stress on creativity.
Do you think SIS is more tradition and stress more on academic results?

2. Are there many singaporean teachers?
Or will students learn the singaporean accent english?

Dear Carolsin,

My comments will be quite positive as I like this school very much.  Hope you don't mind.

1. I cannot tell you a lot for local Singapore schools as my child just attended two weeks in a famous local primary school. As the textbooks for all the Singpore schools are almost the same, my child studied there without any problem.

For SIS (Hong Kong), it's different from Hong Kong schools.
- It has less homework (no homework on Monday and Wednesday due to CCA).
- Less Examinations (1 time for P1 & P2), (2 times for P3-P6).
- Has more other formal lessons like Swimming, Speech and Drama, Dance, French....
- Less stress as no need to have competition with other schools to earn a seat in a famous local school.
- Teaching method is different from local HK schools.
SIS more concentrate in languages (learn both Putonhua and English phonics before P1 so that they can read both Chinese books and English books by themselves) and encourage learn from mistakes, read more books (even though the libarian will introduce books for my child and remeber how long my child doesn't go to libary).
- SIS is more traditional as they still emphasis on student's discplines and obedience. I don't think SIS is stress on academic results.

There are many Singaporen teachers and also many native English and Putonhua speaking teachers.  My child is taught by native speaker teacher from PY1 till now (P3).  Other than languages, students have chance to be taught by Singaporean teachers, esp. Maths and Science.

One of the professor from Singapore told me that they will not speak Singlish at schools.  If they really did, we will not understand at all.

The conclusion is, my child can speak fluent English and Putonghua.  I no need to worry about her Chinese standard. She is able to write over 200 words for Chinese Composition (P3).
