Re: ESF, Tsing Yi

hi hera,

Firstly, thank you so much for your sharing. Sorry for my late reply, as I wasn't in HK these days. In fact, I did reply you last Thursday, unfortunately the message was missing after I click the "send" button. What's a pity? and I received the reply said "the server is busy". I even can't go back to the forum. (Does anyone have the same experience?)

Anyway, I do agree that I should decide my child's path. But it is really a difficult choice for parent.

1. I do agree that ESF kinder is really a good choice. If I plan to let my kid to study international primary school, as although ESF kinder do not guarantee a place in ESF primary, they have got very high percentage of students were accepted.

2. If I want her to study in local primary school, I think I should let her to study local kinder start from Sept 05 K1. As the present school is a real international school, so no home work, no writing too, so I am afraid if I let her to continue and then go to local primay school, I am afraid that she will far away the standard.

Do you have any friend's kid or real case who really study international kinder and then back to local primary? Are they cope with it? As I am afraid it will be a very hard time for the kids to do like this.
Would you mind to share with me how can I teach my kid Chinese at home? What book should I buy?

Re: ESF, Tsing Yi

SLS,

I have already paid the deposit last Wednesday. As ESF kinder actually is my first choice and I was really impressed after I visited. So I paid it to secure a place. On the other hand, I will still search for some more information and comments, so that I could make my final decision before April.

All the parent eagerly to get into the famous local school, for instance St.Catherine, Kentville etc.. I have a question is how good they are?? Are there anyone could share with me?

Re: ESF, Tsing Yi

Dear cpmummy,

Thank you for your sharing.

Actually I'm still in progress (my daughter will be in K1 next year), so I can't tell if it works. But in my friends' experience, it will be difficult for a child to enter from international kindergarten to "very" local primary school. What I mean "very" is referring to chinese primary school, in which their medium of instruction is Chinese. My friends' children in those cases mostly go to private or 直資 English primary schools. The medium instruction is English and partly Chinese, but retain a kind of Chinese culture.

To me, studying international kindergarten and primary is acceptable, but I don't want my daughter to study in international secondary school. Because the culture is totally different, especially in sex issues.

Some people said a child after the 3-year kindergarten would learn to read about 200 Chinese words. You can use this as a guideline to teach her Chinese words in daily life, reading or word cards. There're really lots of kindergarten workbooks in bookshops such as 三聯 & 商務.

You can also search the public library catalogue in 幼兒教育, there will be many books to provide you some idea. You can also borrow 幼稚園課程指引 to see what children learn in local schools.

God Bless,
Hera

Re: ESF, Tsing Yi

hi tyli,

Yes, my application for my child to join ESF kindergarten has been successful. There is no interview for the kids.
As according to the information from the receptionist, all the child were selected by the Principal of ESF kindergarten, but she probably selected the kids by the date chop they received your application letter, means "first come first serve", No priority will be given to the foreign passport holder, as most of their kids are foreign passport holders.
But priority will only be given to the kids who has sibling study in the same kinder.
When is the suggested submit date shown on the gernarl information book for your Jan intake? Is it June? If yes, you might got most chance to get a place, as the suggested submit date for April 05 intake is 1st February 04, so I sent out the application on 3rd February and then received the invitation letter by middle of October.

Hope these information would be helpful for you.

Re: ESF, Tsing Yi

Hera,

Thank you so much for your sharing and information.

I am now more relax. It seems that I could still choose private or 直資 english primary school for my daughter after int'l kindergarten.
I would like to stress that sex issues might not be as worse as we thought, some of my colleagues who were European, they are not really open in sex issues.

I will try to borrow 幼稚園課程指引 in public library, so I could try to understand more. Again, thanks for your information, it really helpful for me.

By the way, how old is your daughter? which intake did you apply for her?

Re: ESF, Tsing Yi

cpmummy,

My daughter was born on March 2002. Since we've just moved back to HK from other country, I sent the application form in early October. Quite late, I think.

Re: ESF, Tsing Yi

hi tyli,

Sorry forgot to mention, they will also give priority to english native speaker.
So it means they will give priority to the english native speaker and the child whose have sibling studied in the kindergarten.

Hi Hera,

I see, your daughter is more or less at the same age as mine (she was born on Feb).

Re: ESF, Tsing Yi

Dear jujuy,

Your son should enter the December 2005 term, right? It's two terms later than my daughter. As some mami said, they're processing the application of April 2005 term. That's why you haven't receved any reply right now.

Re: ESF, Tsing Yi

Dear jujuy,

I don't think your son will enter September 2005. They only accept children of 3 years old. I'm not sure if there will be December 2005 or April 2006 term. You can ask them anyway.
