SIS Interview for PY1

Dear Parents,

Any of your child is studying in SIS or coming to have an interview of PY1?

Can you share how the interview is conducted?  How long is it and what type of questions?  Any tips for successful interview?

My child is a shy girl and relies on me quite a lot.  For the interview of PY1, I asked my husband to bring her there and arrived earlier than the interview time. After she was familiar with the place and played there happily, she entered the place for interview. One lucky mother who can accompany with her cried child told me that  the interviwers (3-4 foreigners) asked her son to pick a 9 from many number cards and asked what's ....doing in the picture....
Therefore, you can ask more questions from a picture to your son and ask him to answer in English, must in English, single word is OK but cannot answer in any Cantonese (if you choose English as the medium).

I like this school and think it's quite suitalbe for Hong Kong people to study as they are strong in Chinese.

I saw from other column that your son studies in another school, why you want to change to SIS?

The current one is mainly focus on English and it paves way to ESF.  I hope he is proficient both in English and Putongha.

BTW, which grade is your child studying in SIS?  What is the chance of having a Secondary School?

My child is studying in P3, the chance? I don't know, waiting for the Singapore Government's approval.  Hong Kong Government already approved.

Is it your preference for your child to learn simplified Chinese over traditional Chinese?  Any comments?

My child attended the interview this morning.  Thanks yyyy for giving me some hints, I asked my sister to go with him instead of myself.  He went into and came out the classroom without crying, but I'm not sure if he is willing to respond the teacher inside.  Anyway, it is already much much better than the previous occasions.  My sister asked him what he did inside the room, he said he played toys.

yyyy, I heard from more than one of the SIS parents that they also wish their children to continue the Secondary School (if approved) because the school has much better discipline and stronger curriculum.  Is this what you think or what you find from the school?

If these comments are true and a Secondary School is approved, then I think you can continue to keep your child there.  Otherwise, I will consider others such as CDNIS, ICF, CIS, Yew Chung, Victoria,etc

Thank you for sharing with us about your son's interview. May I ask why didn't you go to SIS with your son? Which shcool is he studying now? Did you talk to him in English ?

I'm planning to let my son study in SIS if possible. His English is acceptable now but we are going to let my son study in local kindergarten for K1 and wait for the interview  next year. I have a bit worry about his English may get lower because of our decision.

When will you know the result? Is there lots of people apply for PY1 this year?

I visited the school few months ago. According to the lady that I met, she said there is no plan for the secondary school yet as they need sponsor from the Singapore government.

Dear pumpinickle,

I didn't accompany him because he would definitely cry when he is separated from me and attend the place which he find insecure.

He is studying in Starters School.  I talk to him in both languages, and he is talking both languages too depending on whom he talks to.

I think there is a little risk if you let your son studying in local kinder this year and apply SIS or other IS next year, unless you can keep up his English standard yourself.

Most probably the result is know before Easter.  I really don't know how many children are applying to the school, but it looks like that more parents are becoming less confident to the local government on Education.

Dear Kimum,

Secondary school for SIS is a problem for me too.  If you really mind whether SIS will have a secondary school or not, you really need to think about your choices.  No one know when or whether they will have a secondary school or not. Parents usually let their children change school from P4-6, some of them will choose CIS, GSIS....

I still thinking....just want her to enjoy her school life in SIS as long as possible.

You concern is my concern too. However, my husband still insists to let our son study in that local kindergarten as he likes it very much. We are planning to look for some English playgroups for him.
Wish it will help to maintain his English level.

The result of the interview has been announced, my daughter was granted a seat for studying PY1 in 2005-06.  Anyone also rec'd the letter from SIS ?

I think you will be amazed by your daughter after one year by her mandarin speaking, I can still remember my daughter sang a lot of mandarin songs even in the bus. You would like SIS's strong in mandarin and decipline.
