Re: Any view about 2-yr-old Programme at Yew Chung Int. School?

Dear Becky

My daughter had completed nursery in Yew Chung this Jul.  My comment is good.  There are 20 kids in a class with 2-3 teachers (one is native English speaker) and 1 helper (take kid to toilet) daily.

No classwork, writing and textbook.  Only singing, artwork, story telling, outdoor adventure and discipline.

The teachers will teach kids both English and Chinese.  Besides, school will arrange some outdoor activities, such as sports day, visit Yew Chung farm, central library, seasonal party, etc.

If you want more information please pm me.

Re: Any view about 2-yr-old Programme at Yew Chung Int. School?

Hi TinaMummy,

I am now considering letting my baby to attend nursery course.  I prefer bilingual class and international school so as to develop my baby's interest in study.  My baby was born in April 2004, but he can only speak a few words now.  Will it be too difficult for a little baby who does not speak well to attend an billingual nursery class?  Any advice?

Re: Any view about 2-yr-old Programme at Yew Chung Int. School?

Dear pajebaby

May I know what language does your kid speak?  Don't worry, kids will become talkative and so fast to learn when they go to school.  Like my kid before.

Please note that nursery class will accept 2 yrs old kid and playgroup will accept under 2 yrs old.  You may see their web-site http://218.188.16.131/wwwycefcom/

Re: Any view about 2-yr-old Programme at Yew Chung Int. School?

Hi TinaMummy,

We used to talk to my baby in Cantonese.  That's why I am wondering if he can get used to a bilingual playgroup, though we played him VCDs in English frequently.  I have now started talking to by baby in English for some times.  However, as I am a working mother, and my baby is taken care by grandma and my maid who speaks Cantonese, I believe that Cantonese will be his major language for communication at home.

I have briefly surfed their website before and will go into details later.  Anyway, thanks for your reply.

Re: Any view about 2-yr-old Programme at Yew Chung Int. School?

Hi Beckylui,

My elder son studied in Yew Chung's 2 year old class about 3 years ago and my little one is studying in there now. I think it has a very good pre-nusery curriculum and the teachers are very friendly. It's a christian school so the children will learn to say grace before snack time. Children are all trained to be independent so very early on, you will find that your child will be able to put the school bag into his own special drawer, take his outdoor shoes off, feed himself, and tidy up the plates after snack...etc.

The school has frequent meetings with parents to let them know how their child is doing and produces a monthly circular to parents to let them know what songs (with lyrics) and stories had been sung/told that month.  It also provides different snacks for the children so they can sample different types of food. Since start of school, I think my little one had boiled eggs, tuna sandwich, cucumber, cookies, rice roll, macaroni with chicken...etc. for snack.

Interview process was simple. The principal just met the parents and the kid. No taxing questions at all.

Hope this helps.

Re: Any view about 2-yr-old Programme at Yew Chung Int. School?

Hi Pagebaby,

Don't worry as most of the children in the class speak mainly cantonese. They all manage to learn english very quickly. My little boy only spoke english when he started Yew Chung about a month ago, and the teacher told me he now joins in all the cantonese songs. He may not know what they mean, but it won't take him long.

Thanks, Chatterbox.  I just wonder before if my baby will be much behind the others if joining an int. school.  I am now more confident.  TY for your advice.

Re: Any view about 2-yr-old Programme at Yew Chung Int. School?

Hi Pajebaby,

Really no need to worry about it. Although it's an 'International' pre-nursery, at least 50% of the classroom time is in cantonese, and as 90-99% of the children have cantonese as mother tongue, the teachers tend to speak more cantonese to the children during outdoor play time, activities...etc. If my son (being a non-cantonese speaking minority) can manage, there is no reason why yours cannot.

Re: Any view about 2-yr-old Programme at Yew Chung Int. School?

My baby is now 1 yr old and I want to let him enter into PN class next year... YC is one of my choice...

currently he is taking the playgroup at victoria (HMT) once a week and seems okay for him...

I don't know whether YC is good or not?  and if cantonese is my mother tongue, will it be okay for him to communicate with other classmates and teachers?

how abt when finishing the PN course, would it be easier to get into the K1 class in YC or SC?

Re: Any view about 2-yr-old Programme at Yew Chung Int. School?

HI Joshuama,

Personally I think YC is good for Pre-nursery.   If your child's mother tongue is cantonese, he/she should have no problem understanding the chinese teachers. Children at this age do not really communicate with each other through speech.  With body language and pictures and songs, I am sure he/she will be alright with the english teacher too.

If you want your child to stay in YC for kindergarten, I believe it's automatic and no further intereviews will be conducted. I sent my son to St Catherine's instead for kindergarten as I would like to keep my options open for primary 1.

Not sure whether attending PN will make it easier to get into K1 at SC (I assume you mean St Catherine's?) ... I suppose so as my elder one got admitted by both SC and Kentville.  Both SC and Kentville require interviews, which at the tender age of 2, it's really anyone's guess how they would perform! I was lucky as my elder one answered all the questions and did not cry....

Re: Any view about 2-yr-old Programme at Yew Chung Int. School?

One more thing I should add. I remember calling the school up and arranged for a visit during school hours. Then you can see for yourself what a typical school day is like for the 2 yr olds.  YC has playgroup for 1 year olds too if you are interested. Same premise as the 2 year olds.

Re: Any view about 2-yr-old Programme at Yew Chung Int. School?

Thanks, Chatterbox.

My son has joined the playgroup organised by Victoria (HMT) already... The premise there is good too BUT the foreigner teacher is too

YC is one of my choice coz it is near to KCR station and I want to let my son to study SC (reason same as you) in K1 too.

I've called the YC for school visit but the woman said the school visit will be conducted when you submit the form and not in school hours.

Re: Any view about 2-yr-old Programme at Yew Chung Int. School?

Hi Joshuama,

If you are interested, there is a Romper Learning programme open day at YC on 24th Sept (Sat) between 2-4:30pm. It's in the same premise as the 2 year old classes, so you can take a look at the classroom, play area. Children between 1-3 yrs old are all welcome to the Open day to take part in activities .

Re: Any view about 2-yr-old Programme at Yew Chung Int. School?

Hi Chatterbox,

My little boy goes to Yew Chung's 2 yr old class too. He is in K2D. Which class is your baby in?

I agree with Chatterbox that Yew Chung's nursery is great. My baby loves it there and always comes home telling me what has happened at school.

I have a friend who puts her baby in a more famous "traditional" nursery and she told me the children got graded in their handbooks for things like cleaniness, politeness, willing to share etc. Not saying that is a problem but I personally don't think grading a 2 yr old has any bearings as they wouldn't understand the concept of grades so the system only makes parents nervous.

Also, we were invited to Yew Chung's sports day last year and had great fun. The children were rewarded and given stickers for completion of an event, not winning places.

So I think at Yew Chung, children learn in a caring and non-competitive environment. I wished I had gone to this school when I was a young kid.

Re: Any view about 2-yr-old Programme at Yew Chung Int. School?

Hi HoHoMom,

thanks for your sharing.

I just received the letter from YC about the 新生入學介紹會.  My view is quite similar to you, I'm not aiming to push my son to learn the things which are outside his ability but just want to bring him to an environment which is warm and can encourage him to explore and learn.  I hope the PN course can be a milestone for him to build up his study life from K1 onwards.

How do you bring your son to school?  by school bus or KCR??? and can you share how do you feel about the teachers there?  I went to there last Sat for the open day for Rompers programme.  Seens to me that the teachers there are quite okay (at least compare with Vic... the teachers there were soooo $$ minded!!!) but I wonder whether it's worth to pay such a high school fee ($4,8xx per month) for the pre-nursery course...

Actually how much you need to spend each month??? I mean in addition to the school fee, any other expense need to pay to the school??

Sorry for so many questions.

Re: Any view about 2-yr-old Programme at Yew Chung Int. School?

Hi Joshua媽,

It has never occurred to me that the teachers or any other staff including the principal is money minded ! No one has talked to me about money at Yew Chung. And so far, I have just paid tuition every month, nothing extra.

My baby's teachers are fabulous. Nice, caring, experienced, and know every single child well. Whenever I asked them about my baby, they can tell me his character and behavior quoting incidents. They even notice which children my baby has played with (coz the children at their age doesn't really play with each other all that much so I was delighted to hear about that).

I take my baby to school myself and that's when I get to talk to the teachers and learn the other children's names.

One thing I am really impressed with is the way Yew Chung handle "seperation". If you check my previous messages, I was very worried that my baby would have problems staying at school by himself coz he was very "sticky" to me (he still is!). But thanks to the school's separation technique, my baby had not cried at all and he could be seperated within 2 weeks. I believe that helps him a lot in enjoying his school life.

Whether the fee is worth it really depends on what you think. My cousin whose son is in Creative thinks Yew Chung's fee isn't worth it at all because the outdoor facilities look old and worn out. Whether the facilities are new obviuosly means a lot to her so in her case, Yew Chung's not worth it. But for me, I put my focus on how and how much the school helps my baby develop into a decent confident little kid who loves to learn. I couldn't care less if the playground is not huge and the school's facilities aren't new.

Re: Any view about 2-yr-old Programme at Yew Chung Int. School?

Many thanks, HoHoMom.

I'm a working mom and so I need to think of how to take my son to school in future.  Luckily YC is very close to KCR station and so it's convenient to me.

Let's see what I get from the introductory seminar next Thursday.
