I want to let him study international school, but I worry my parents speak Cantonese to him, then his English standard may be low. If I let him study playgroup or 1 year old class, do you think his English can improve? What can I do in this case? Many Thanks~~

My daughter was taken care by my in-laws in their home before and they also do not speak English.  To improve my daughter's English, I decided to hire a Philipino maid and move my daughter back to my home.  I also send her to English playgroup since she was one and speak English to her at home.  She can speak both now.  However, I realize she has more tendency to speak Cantonese and can master new Cantonese vocabularies faster.

In my opinions, creating an environment is very important.  Therefore, putting him in playgroups for only a couple of hours a week is not sufficient.

I agreed with wcllks, environment + practice.

Live / share time with grands also learnt valuable things, you basically should not block your kids to see the oldie and it is simply not working. They can go to visit you when you are not at home.

Let me share my story. I know long ago the int school running in HK and they work fine. But I just like ordinary family, I did not plan to send my kids to int and I thought it was difficult to get in, basically two barriers (language and money).

When I observed somebody teaching the kid to finish the homework on time, work together for tomorrow dictation. I started to think that were my friends doing the right things, worked so hard but seemed to have unsatisfied results.

So, I decide to put my children to int ASAP. At that moment, my elder son was 3.5, finished the nursery and was doing K1 in a traditional kindergarten. My younger started nursery and I have already enrolled him into a so called int but it is not really int from my observation.

Now, they are successful getting into int and both are doing fine, interestingly my elder son is doing much better than his brother even his brother never attend traditional school from date 1.

So, the conclusion is. Don't worry to much because one of the very important factor is your son is one year old, very very advantage. Going to play group can help but you cannot lock him whole day there.  You and your spouse have to speak English to your kid in full sentence as much as you could. Talk with maid normally can only learn to say one single word liked Yes, No, Train, Fish .. etc. Other useful source may be the TV, play such as Disney English can help too.

我同你一樣想bb學好英文，第時讀國際學校，不過我都要佢學好普通話，（我期望佢母語係廣東話，能第二語言係普通話同英文，但都要接近廣東話咁好），我有以下安排:
- 在家bun bun同佢講英文
- 之前我都同佢講英文但覺得佢只明英文，所以近幾個月只同佢講廣東話
- 去全英文playgroup
- 2 歲開始讀普通話+英文學校（2歲班係1/3英文,2/3普通話）
- 在家看+聽英文歌
- 看英文書

Make them watch Seseme Street...buy them Seseme st. DVD's...I think Elmo's world really help!!

Buy a DVD recorder instead, many good TV programs are available from the Pearl and ATV world Channel.

Disney channel in Now TV is also good, but sesame street has advantage because disney contains so many childish language, quite sloppy. Sesame is better.

Sesame Street is pretty good    .  It can repeat the same word or theme in many different ways.  It's easy for preschoolers to remember.  My son loves Elmo very much!

My girl is attending the afternoon school so she can't watch sesame Street on TV. I have tried to search DVD/VCD in the shops but they are all the special eposode, not the daily one.

Does any one where I can buy the Sesame Street same as TV series?
