Re: is it hard to get into canadian international school ? how about HK Internat

I think some of the attraction of this school is its
- through train education from kinder to secondary
- very big and nice campus with all sorts of facilities
- suitable to most HK parents requirements with daily Mandarin class and various extracurriculum activities.

However, the debenture is one of the highest among the IS, >$250,000

Re: is it hard to get into canadian international school ? how about HK Internat

thanks for sharings, and this is what my husband & I have observed. To us, this is one of the reasons why we consider Canadian IS.

My husband and I were graduated from very traditional college in Hong Kong when we were young. We both spent our high school and U in Canada. We are those kind of people that do not want to put too much pressure on our kids, especially in academic area.  We want to give our kids more opportunities to try different things and explore, focus on personal development..etc.

I don't know why, maybe due to sense of belonging, when we had a school tour/visit in Canadian IS, both husband & I feel very comfortable and the 'happy' environment. We went to some other International School and we felt that some focus a lot a lot on academic results or too 'commercial'.

I totally understand all parents would like to give and choose the 'best' for their kids, and the ways of teaching/bringing up their kids are different as well...due to different life style, different goal in life, different values...etc.

anyway, thanks for your sharings and I will keep on observing more.

how about Hong Kong International School in Tai Tam ? French International School ?
did you do any research on those two ? thanks

Re: is it hard to get into canadian international school ? how about HK Internat

For French international School, it is divided into two section, international section (British curriculum) and French section (French curriculum). When compare with Cdnis, the international section are highly demanding, more focus on academic and very conservative. Chinese is the minority. I feel very 'little' (only my opinion). But my child still feel comfortable and happy study in there.
For Cdnis, I have several friends whose kids are studying there, they said they are very happy and enjoy the school life very much. For the academic, they are not very weak, they have phonic, reading scheme and no homework.
For HKIS, sorry I don't know very much.

I always heard that French and GSIS are very demanding and highly academic focused.  How would you compare these two schools ?

Re: is it hard to get into canadian international school ? how about HK Internat

To Ribbon,

For the Reception class interview, it is a group interview. 4-6 children in a group and taken by one teacher to a classroom. Parents are waiting outside in the playround. When the child enter into a classroom, they will listen a story. And afterward, they need to answer a few questions about the story. But it is a competition between the children and need to raise up their hand as fast as possible.
After that, each child will take to another place to test the ability e.g writing their name, recognising something (sorry I forget) and answer some questions. The highest score will be admitted. For Reception class, each year they admitted 50 children.

To adachan318,

For the academic level, I think both of the school are doing the same thing. It is hard to compare when only focus in academic level. Both international stream are following British curriculum. But a different is in F.6 and F.7, FIS sit IB diploma and GSIS sit AS and A level.

Re: is it hard to get into canadian international school ? how about HK Internat

thx for the info.
it seems that French international school interview focus more on how much the children will participate, take an active role, willingness to learn, discipline, whether they pay attention, and follow instructions...etc.

Usually, how old is the child when having the interview for the reception class ?

If I remember correctly, the youngest grade is reception (around 4 yrs old when attending school) right ?

Re: is it hard to get into canadian international school ? how about HK Internat

To Ribbon,

Yes, the youngest grade is 4 year old reception class (international section). As I remember, the applicant of Reception class must reach the age 4 by September of the year which they seek admission. And usually the interview is hold at the begining of that year. For example, my girl is a 'big' girl (born on January), so she is nearly 4 when attend the interview.
Also, my daughter had attend the Reception class interview of Cdnis. When compare with FIS it is much easier. Both parents and the children are waiting at the conference room. Then each teacher will call 4 children's name and they will follow the teacher and go into a classroom. There are some toys in the classroom. The children are allowed to play with those toys. And finally, the teacher will ask each child some questions (I just remember those questions were very simple). The interview hold around 30-45 min. After the interview, my girl said she was very happy and she want to study in this school.
I hope those information can help you.
