Before you go: open a bank account at same bank for both yourself and your child. Citigold doesn’t charge extra if you transfer to USA . Not sure of other banks
And I also arranged supplementary credit card for him plus help him get a debit card for his own bank account.
Credit card : upside ->flexible and if you lose it, just call card center
Debit card: a back up but u need to first deposit money there first. Downside -> you lose the card, the money in it are gone
After arrival at US:
Step 1: when you arrive in US, go to mobile provider and get a plan and hence phone number
Step 2: go to any local bank to open bank account
Ask for bank remittance details and give it to u so u can do remittance to him in future
And the bank account would usually come with cheque book and a debit card.
If he needs to use Uber or doordash, need to link to a card. Better to link to that card as sometimes certain merchants ask for OTP and you can only get that number of you register it with a local phone number
Suggest you open bank account in US for his cash withdrawal or operate online shopping, and they would ask for phone number.
He can apply credit card later when he stays longer time there. But at start I am afraid he can only get a debit card from his bank account there .
And no single bank dominates in whole USA. It really depends on the city . So pls ask the school which bank is more popular round that area and decide where you open a bank account
For myself, I ask my child to use my supplementary card as much as possible for easy control. It depends on whether u want to give more autonomy to him or not.
Do it with school. It’s a must. Don’t ever run to casualty randomly. You would be broke. People usually visit cvs (a pharmacy) if they catch a cold and grab some otc medicines. They also offer flu shots at cvs. Carry their insurance card with them all the time.
Some kids like to trade US stocks as a little hobby. US equity allows to trade even one share. Open an IBKR account in hk before going and link it to his bank account in hk. It’s hard for them to do it in Us as they need social securities number to do it. They don’t have that number if they are new students. Just to share my experience with u guys .
Depends on states, government of the state your school is located should hv basic insurance requirement on health insurance necessary on each student enrolled for certain amount credits or over every year. The cover should be available to students on either school website or their enrolment package. Suggest you take a look if you believe that is sufficient. That should cover both in patient and out patient cost and the net amount payable by students is affordable.
Students who hv taken insurance elsewhere can apply a waiver for not enrolling in the plan provided by school. But if the school has a plan already, we didn’t bother do it separately elsewhere.
