kgv vs Canada public school

幫朋友問，佢排kgv 終於有admission test插g7下學期。但佢本已計劃下年9月去加拿大讀第7班。個個都話kgv勁考到唔洗走。請求意見。

我覺得係香港讀國際學校，一係為仔女出國大學鋪路，又可以留係香港生活，成本冇咁高。始終出國留學成本高過讀國際學校好多，生活變化比較大，如果要小朋友一個去外國，好易學壞（學好十年，學壞一日）
如果係一家人移民的話，一定洗唸KGV,

I would suggest your friend not to send their child to Canada public schools. 我2x年前的經驗, 那裡很多誘惑, 很易變懶或學壞。也不要盼望老師會inspire 到學生什麼, 學生可以5年中學也不用發表意見或不用參與 discussions 也可, 總之交齊功課tests齊就可畢業。香港國際學校既學生一般都比較純D和積極進取D。讀IB本身就雖要學生 proactive and engaging. 入到 KGV 一定好過去加拿大讀 public school!!

I think it depends on which public school as well.
My daughter was an IB student in Hong Kong and is now in a third year students in a pre-professional program in Ontario. Many of her classmates were from canadian public high schools. She said most were very talented and definitely not less competent than her IB peers in Hong Kong.
Not all IB students are "great" students, many are also very mediocre. So no need to think too highly of ourselves.

My only consideration is that, a child in Year 7 or Grade 7 should be with the parents.
Wherever the parents are, the child should be with them.
If parents stay in Hong Kong, go to KGV.
If parents go with the child to Canada, then go to the public school.
And if a child is to leave parents for school, choose a boarding school.
Canadian public schools have no boarding service.
Living with a relative or an arranged "host family" would not be my choice.

I studied in Vancouver public school since grade 9, I believe it should be year 10 in some international schools in HK.  Based my experience, public school are good, students are all pure and parents are kind and helpful.  since the public school (elementary or secondary) are offered based on the location of where we lived, therefore I don't think all public school is not good.  at least the public school that I studied was good and with IB too.  most students from public schools were graduated from famous Universities in Canada as well.

Agree, either way will be fine as long as sticking with the parents at this young age.

唔好意思，想問下如果G7小朋友獨自到海外升學係太細，咁大約grade 幾先比較適合？（明白每個小朋友成熟程度不度，只是一般而言幾多歲去較好？）

我自己plan最早grade 9, grade 7真係好BB，我姪女咁仲係要攬著毛毛公仔瞓，鐘意儲貼紙，佢自己都覺未ready, 當然人人不同。

我對home stay冇研究不清楚，因為我個係女，中學我盡量吾會home stay只會找boarding school

Indeed.
So whether a person can get into a "good public school" depends on the "residential address" he has.
Many elite schools are in fact public schools. Of course, there are also many not really good.
Likewise, there are also good private schools and "wild chicken" private schools.

I was raised in Canada so I completed all elementary, secondary and university education in Canada's public system. I do think highly of its education system and I believe overall the students are kind hearted and have good intentions. I do not think HKIS students are any different than in Canada-- there are always some bad apples out of the bunch. Sending your child abroad is a big decision for most and it depends greatly on your child's personality. I know some of my friends growing up in Canada all by themselves since age 10 and they turned out to be success professionals. So there are always exceptions (both good and bad ones). The biggest benefit of living abroad is the exposure, that is something that is hard of achieve in HK for most as it is a small place and the people mix are limited.

I believe age 14 is a good age. 12 is a little young if she is not boarding. But at the end of the day, your child's character will tell you when is the most appropriate. The quality of experience also depends on where in Canada you decide to go.

Thanks for your support. He is going to a school which is a feeder school of the Rank 9th in a Province. It should not be chicken... There are only at most 7 private school higher than it (For sure No1 is public school, not quite sure the other 7). And his father will move with him.

Seems he will take the offer of KGV, if any, and complete the Grade 7 2nd term first. And then see what is the option later.
