I agree that mother tongue should be taught first as your childl need one language to understand the world.

I use Cantonese to teach my child when I discovered he was language delay with A features. Then when he was about 2.5 years, he became very interested in English words (seems many A child like English), I began to teach him English, but will explain the Chinese equalivent. Now he began to speak English sentences, but all his understanding is based on Cantonese.
