Does anyone know the ratio of Cat 1 and cat 2?

Just check with the secretary of Abacus(She's called Josephine). She said that last year, they finally offered places to all Cat. 1 & 2 kids.

My eldest son is studying in ESF primary school and my second daughter is in Cat. 2 because we honestly filled in the application form and told them that we spoke Chinese at home.

The play visit, I guess, is to assess how well the kids (and even parents) can communicate in English. In the past, there were no interviews. Some students had difficulties understanding the teachers. Even after 2 years' studies, a few kids had to attend 2-3 interviews before they got a place in primary school.

My friend claimed on the form that they could only speak English (which is not true), then they're in Cat.1. But they have to bear the responsibility even if their child gets a place. My son's classmate had been advised to repeat his studies in K2 because he didn't understand English.

This is what we (existing parent) got from the last week "weekly newletter" regarding the visit:

"The week beginning the 18th January will see the beginning of a two week programme of visits by children and parents who are interested in enrolling for August 2010.The children (in small group) will participate in the "open activities" section of our sessions and their parents will have a brief tour of the kindergarten, get some information about he programme and an opportunity to ask questions before making a decision about whethe they want to join us"

Hope those can help/give a brief insight of what the informal visit is like....

My bb also attended abacus interview yesterday.
She's on the waiting list.
I don't think it's an interview, I think the 'informal visit' is to see whether your family is a 'real' category 1 family.
I saw lots of forefingers in the afternoon, they are also in the waiting list..I guess that probably means no category 2 applicants is accepted?
It's said the quota is 88 this year, and there are 22 in the waiting list..
Any body know does waiting list means pm class for sure?

Koala_xin, why you know your kid is on waiting list even though you have attened informal visist yesterday?

I was there yesterday. Many foreigner parents are on waiting list and local family may don't have chance for ESF primary interview.

how about SW ESF, anyone attended the informal visit? seems not everyone can get the contract even though they were invited to the informal visit...

The informal play visit, a new measure implemented in all ESF kindergartens, is not an admission test but an opportunity to screen out the bogus Cat 1 applicants and those with special education needs that the kindergarten would not be able to cater.  No children will be offered a place without attending the play visit.  In fact, the admission mechanism works exactly the same as before.  Who gets the invite hinges on the random number assigned.  It is just a matter of luck.  For TY, only Cat 1 applicants are invited to the first round play visit.  As the competition this year is very keen, some Cat 1 children are on waitlist.  If places have not yet been fully taken up after the first round of offer, they will be invited to the next round.

Whether your child can access the curriculum depends on his/her English standard.  The understanding of the language is of course important.  The teachers only observe how the child interacts with the parent.  So just let him/her play as usual.
