5 years old is a good age to start "learning" tennis.   But don't expect your kid can hit some good balls within a short period.  My advice:

1.  Tennis is a highly discipline sport - unlike football, basketball (for examples) which you can toy with the ball as long as you like.  Balls are flying at relatively high speed (even at kids' level), so it requires some good skills to "keep the ball in play."

2.  Be patient with your kids.  Children of such young age should be trained more on "dexterity" (靈巧度), interest in tennis, and having funs.

3.  Having the right interest, mindset, and skills are more important than being able to hit the balls.

4.  In tennis-developed countries (e.g. France), kids start learning tennis via "mini-tennis."  Because mini-tennis is easier to master, children can develop prolonged interest and sense of success.  More importantly, they are less likely to learn bad skills (不容易學壞手).

Oops, too lenghy la....
