I trust you have wealth of experience on this.

Choosing book of appropriate level is important for guided reading, but at the same time, I have to give some freedom to the kid.  I will let my son to choose the content.  He will not read the book at all if the content doesn't attract him.

For those books (which he selected) beyond his level, I will read them or re-tell them using simple phase.  I will not let him read untill he reaches that level.

No, this is not a good method especially when you start helping your kid to develop the capability and interest in reading.

Thanks for your suggestion.

My son is 6 years old, currently in P.1.  His teacher told me that there is a system to measure kid's reading capability.  She said the highest grade is 18, probably a P.6 kid may reach this level.  She said my son is now in between 6-7.  [I have no knowledge of this system.]

I have a full set of ladybird "key word" series books (12 levels).  I ask my son to read aloud for 15 minutes everyday.  We start at level 3 2 years before, now he can read level 8.  In addition, we also read Oxford reading trees/ Oxford story books.  

Do you have other recommendation?

I don't know how old is you kid and what is his/her current reading level.

However, I would suggest you to choose at least ONE reading book PER DAY at appropriate level and ask your kid to read ALOU ...

I really have no idea of how the school measures my son's reading ability.

My son finished ORT Level 4 last summer,  he could handle that with ease.  Then we switched to Oxford story book (cos it is cheaper).  Now he is reading the Pink series.  It is a bit difficult for him (more than 10 difficult words in one book).  I think I may need to switch back to ORT as per your suggestion.

He brings home a book from school every week, that is "Sunshine books" Yellow level.  He can read and understand it without any difficulty.  After reading the book, he can do the reading activity himself.

There are different assessment models or systems and I am not sure which one you boy's school is using.

However, those models or systems are only for assessing the reading capability of very junior  ...

Thanks for your advice, that's really useful.  I will go to the bookshop later to buy back some ORT.  I gather my son is now at level 6.

For the Sunshine book, that is part of the English assignment and my son needs to do it once every week.  Usually, the school will distribute a book to the kid and ask him to complete several reading activities within a day or two.

我仔都係睇緊oxford story tree green, 因為係present tense, 我想問如果轉睇oxford reading tree, 點教小朋友past tense 呢? 係咪要用中文解釋比佢知, 或是不用特別解釋, 等小朋友自已理解呢?

My boy is in P3(=p4 for IS), the guided reading from his school almost stop, now I let him read what he like. Should I prepare something for him?

I also agree ORT is better than OST. But not all OST levels are written in present tense. The 4th level of OST (orange colour) is written in past tense. My girl's kindy is using OST level 4 now.

因為我曾聽過有人說當看英文書時不要講中文, 這樣只會令小朋友將中文翻譯為英文, 不是好事.

所以我才有這樣的疑慮

I checked the pink series of Oxford Story books at home last night.  They are indeed the same as Level 8 of Oxford Reading Tree, and past tense is used all along.  I think Oxford Story books only publishes part of the books under ORT.

Yes, I agree.  I will buy more books from ORT levels 7 to 8.  My son can read (less than 2 difficult words in a page) and understand the pink series (equivalent to level 8 of ORT) now.  

Apart from these books, I will ask him to read the Ladybird "Key Word" series.  The vocab of these series is carefully controlled.  My plan is to let him familiar with the most frequent used words.

Yes, safarimama has mentioned that. For higher levels of the OST, they were exactly the same as similar titles of the ORT.

However, within a level of OST may contain books from more than one level of ...

HAHA!　My girl also likes to choose non-fiction books. And like most kids, she loves to read something about "knowledge"...then keep asking you silly questions!!
Btw, "Magic school bus" is also very interesting, and it provides DVD too.
