The material available in the market is a mix of those from Mainland, Taiwan and those written by Hong Kong practitioners.
I think the proper way for kids to learn Chinese language should follow either the Mainland or Taiwan approach. Having spoken to some teachers recently, some say that the Mainland apprach is the best one since they provide a comprehenive way to learn to learn Chinese and all are under the scrinty of the Education Board. On the contrary, some perfer Taiwan approach. They say the Mainland approach is not suitable for kids here in Hong Kong because kids in Mainland will receite a lot of materials particulary poems. The essay written by Mainland people will be more akin to poems (I don't know much about this). Those used in Taiwan are more easily understood with well written supplementary notes.
