Hi sandythepooh:

HH got which school offer for KG?  How much you bought the school uniform to HH?

My son now is 20months, he always do anything in his mind (好硬頸),I tried to talk to him don't do this thing and explain to him or even to hit his hand, but it is no use.  I am very worry for his temper and I hope he will improve when he can talk.  If not, I affraid he may not accept another KG.

Re: HK Preschool - Royal Ascot

Hi Sandy,

As you know I'm having trouble disciplining Pui Pui lately too. I spoke to a friend who introduced a very good website on disciplining. It's at www.askdrsears.com. I've printed more than a hundred pages on ways to discipline a toddler. I don't know whether or not the methods work but at least they are keeping me calmer.

Thank you all for your kind advices regarding my situation. It's a very trying time for us - for Pui because she's just started school again and she's been sent to the inlaws and will be going through one more helper change again (2nd time)..... but I've got some ideas now on how to handle. Fingers crossed, hope they'll work or I've gotta think of Plan B. Hee hee.

I spoke to Ms Tam last night too. She said Pui has been very emotional and cries at times in class. My poor baby.

Re: HK Preschool - Royal Ascot

Sandy,

There is also a difference in expectations between a western way of teaching and a chinese way of teaching. Take Pui Pui's Tutortime experience for example. For the English, Pui Pui stood next to Mr Michael to dance and copy his actions. He would allow that and would encourage her by saying, "Look, here's my little helper, I can retire now". And to him it's great that the other kids see her doing the actions so they can follow.
In her Mandarin sessions, Pui did the same and was told to go back to Mummy and sit down.

Western teaching would say, "Let kids be kids" and Chinese teaching would say, "Start disciplining early". I think for us, it means striking a balance between both. What I did with Pui (she too wouldn't sit down in the first 2 months according to Miss Tam) was that I would sit her down on a chair at home and read to her for 0.5 - 1 minute, then I would extend to 2 minutes and then 3 minutes (not really reaching 3). I would tell her a story in her language (using the words she could understand) and I would be very entusiastic about the book myself. She was interested in balls so I read a story about Laa Laa's ball and doing lots of actions with it in case Pui didn't understand me. It was easy. Laa Laa kicked the ball, it landed on a tree, Laa Laa was not told enough to get the ball. Then his friend had an idea by swinging a bag onto the tree and the ball fell. I would laugh and laugh at how silly Laa Laa was and Pui would laugh along with me. If she got up because she was bored, I let her. I would try again with a different book the next day. By doing so, I was hoping that when her teachers read to her, Pui would approach storytime in the same amount of enthusiasm we were doing at home. It worked according to Ms Tam but I'm not sure about now.

Re: HK Preschool - Royal Ascot

Imak,

I bought two sets of each of the PE uniform and normal uniform for HH, coz my maid can't catch up with the laundry.  Since the PE lessons are on Mon and Wed, you may buy 1 set of PE uniform only if you can match the schedule.

Kids at this age are like this... terrible 2 ma....I always face similar situation.... since HH is very active and likes to go around and explore, I'll usually let him try if it's not harmful.... this make life easier.... like last night, he took away the cap of the "steam hole" of the hudmidifier and try to put his hand in.... I told him "no" coz it's hot and he didn't listen.... I finally let him try and he stopped doing that after he realized that it's really HOT.... but for some "important" issue (like must hold adult when crossing the road), we'll stick with our rule and won't let go.......

pls. check pm

Re: HK Preschool - Royal Ascot

MayAnne,

Agreed ..... you know, according to what I've learned in my child psy, parenting style can be divided into 4 types, (1) Authoritative - reasonable demands/control, high sensitivity and acceptance to child; (2) authoritarian - many rules and high demands, little sensitivity; (3) permissive - few rules /demand, high acceptance and (4) uninvolved - low demand and acceptance....... Authoritative style obviously is the best and I'm working hard to learn that, but it's hard to strike a balance, especially for working mothers like us    I usually find HH facing different standard and rules when he's taken care by someone else during the day.....

I tried similar technique and asked HH to perform certain task at a place but seems this only works when HH is given juice or ice-cream       Maybe I should try the way like you, simulating the classroom situation

btw, are you changing helper again?  I thought you're settled now with your new good helper tim?

Re: HK Preschool - Royal Ascot

Good afternoon, everyone!!! Had a meeting this morning so I couldn't write.

Joey, thank you so much for the lovely presents for Pui Pui. We received two as well. I asked Pui Pui who she got them from and she said, "Miss Tam". I'll have to tell her that it's from Irene and Wai Wai. Thank you so much.

Once again, I do apologise that I was a scatterbrain last month and forgetting.

Yesterday, Ms Tam called and said Pui was much better at school. Although she cried hysterically at the station, she didn't at school apparently. My talk must have helped. I was reading her a story the night before and then she said, "One more time, please" and I replied, "ui, it's bedtime now. If you go to school, Miss Tam will read you another story". And even when she enjoyed playing her toys and her painting. I said, "Okay, time's up. Clean up" and she protested and again I said, "If you go to school, Ms Tam will give you more "time". I don't know whether or not it'll work but it's worth a try. Anyway, today I also kept my goodbyes short.

In the past two days, Pui said a few things. She said that she has a friend called, "Wong Pak Yew". I think his name must come before her name during the rollcall because that is the only FULL name I've heard her say. Funnily enough when I ask Pui for her name, she doesn't say "ui Pui" anymore. She'll say, "Annelise" (but in a very unclear way). My little girl is growing up.

I look at her hair (not much of it) and I pretend that she's only very small but she's growing tall and I know that she's no longer a baby.

Hubby has been in China so I've been sleeping with Pui. Hubby keeps saying I shouldn't because she was always good sleeping on her own but I feel sooo lonely that it's nice to have her beside me. I'm gonna suffer when I have my next child... oh well... they are only young once
