中大學生會於開學禮之演講
Speech of CUSU in Inauguration Ceremony for Undergraduates 2007
Dear freshmen,
I am Napoleon Wong, the president of the student union of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shaw College Year 2, major in Government and Public Administration. First of all, I would like to congratulate everybody here, having a chance to study in the Chinese University of Hong Kong. You must have gone through lots and lots of examinations before able to study here, please cherish the chance and be happy studying here.
Last year, I am also one sitting in the auditorium. I know, being a freshman, you must be very happy and exciting to be able to study here. One of the reasons are it’s not easy to be able to study in such a famous university; secondly, you must be well looking forward to your university life. Please allow me to share some of my feelings this year of university life.
I understand, most of our fellow students sees university as for a several of things only, getting high GPA, graduate with first honour degree, finally find a good job to do. The final goal of studying in university is to find a good job, therefore most of them thinks the most important thing to do in universities are to study. This is also what your parents, peers and even the society’s vision of a standard university student. I don’t totally disagree with this theory, but by doing this, I think you overlooked the most important portion of university life, which is a freedom in atmosphere.
What is actually this freedom in atmosphere? For you all that just entered university, you will feel a complete difference with respect to secondary schools. No one will force you to lessons, make you hand in your homework nor reminding you to tests and examinations. You have to plan your own time table, and your pace of learning. Of course, what I have just said is only the facial freedom. What really bothers me is a place that allows you freedom to think, to introspect, to re-identify your position and to find your own dream. In the university, you can participate in various aspects of activity, and you have numerous chances to approach them. You can choose in large number of programmes to study, participate in student societies affairs, go to the library and study the tons of books available in different aspects. You also have much chance to join exchange programmes to foreign countries, to interact with your professors, or have meaningful conversions with your peers. You can explore your life, find part-time jobs and do internships. If you find yourself insufficient time, you may skip lessons, if you like, you can sleep in the dormitory, no one will disturb you, no one will remind you anything. You are allowed to decide your lifestyle and attitude. I think that freedom in university life gives me a chance to find out myself, and to reposition myself in the society. I believe I won’t forget the days I have in CUHK.
I hope all of you here will enjoy and appreciate the few years of university life coming ahead of you.

President, CUSU |
