Re: RC Parents. Let's share.

Hi Brent,

I just got a notice from RC yesterday asking us to send a cheque to school for buying Chinese books for them. So, will know what kind/level of Chinese book they are using, will let you know. In fact, I don't know the books used for local school, can't compare.

But last year, when my son was in Y1, his private Mandarin teacher used the local school P.1 book for him (I think). But he can only finish one book after a year. Also, I think his Chinese level is totally not comparable with that of local schools cos' there's not copying, dictation, test and exams for him.

Apart from the Chinese lessons, my son never reads Chinese books !

Re: RC Parents. Let's share.

Hi Ruby,

I also got a notice from school asking me to pay for the Chinese books (朗文高班中文課本及練集本/工作本) and thus I know they are local K3 books.

I encourage my son to read one Chinese book and one English book per day.  The method is that I read him one book / tell him one story and then he reads me one book in return.  He is OK with reading Chinese book but he likes to read it in Cantonese rather than Putonghua.  However, he mixes up the pronunciation of Cantonese and Putonghua sometimes.

I put more effort to train up his reading rather than writing at this stage because I believe that the better he reads now, the better he could write at a later stage.

Re: RC Parents. Let's share.

Hi, Ruby

I read from that notice that RC used the kind of Chinese textbook with simplified character.  Is that the case?  Have you got any idea or information on kind of Chinese characters i.e. simplified or traditional the Year 2 kids learn?

Thanks.

Re: RC Parents. Let's share.

The campus seems to be a maze as all buildings are connected.  Will the younger primary kids get lost easily?  Are they allowed to have lunch in the hub area?   Is security enough?

For Chinese, it is good to know from the Head of Chinese program that RC's level is equivalent to the counter level in local school, i.e. Chinese in Y1 of RC = K3 of local kinder, Y7 of RC = P.6 of local primary.

The principal and teachers seems to be very nice!

Re: RC Parents. Let's share.

jwytl,

As far as I know, their Chinese is taught all in traditional characters. I heard from their principal that they will add simplified Chinese in a later stage.

Re: RC Parents. Let's share.

WYmom,

I found my son quite ok with the new campus. He did not get lost so far, at least did not hear him saying so. And, he's very excited about the football pitch on the top of the school hall.

But I would doubt if their Chinese leve is really equivalent to the counter level in local school. Simple logic is that the time they spend on Chinese is far less than that of local school, how can they achieve the same level ? And, obviously my son would prefer English to Chinese if he has the choice, e.g. watching TV, reading books, reading the road signs, etc.

Re: RC Parents. Let's share.

Dear Leechang

I think so.

My son is now in Year 2.  It is not very difficult to get into Year 2 but the kid has to speak up in the interview.  The kid is required to read some sentences from the story book and the interviewer will ask him/her some questions.  Besides, the kid may be asked to read some Chinese characters.  A test of their reading in Chinese and English only.

Hope this answers your question.

Re: RC Parents. Let's share.

Dear all,
Long time no chat. I have bought the RC's cap for my girl.
Have your child joined the CAS activities? My girl cannot join any CAS activity after school because no school bus can send her home. Hope this will be improved in the 2nd term CAS activity.
She loves the music lesson (50-60min) very much, because she always sings the songs that taught in the school.
She told me that she and her friends find 3 ways to go to the library.  I think this is quite funny for them.
The lunch is still yummy, she told me that the teachers will have lunch there, too.
After 1 month, how do your child feel?

Re: RC Parents. Let's share.

My son just bought the chinese text books. I heard that they are using Local school p4 - p6 (depends on the grouping of the children)..

I thot they were supposed to use simplified chinese.. but now it seems that they are using the traditional chinese.

Other ESF schools uses the simplified chinese.. why is RC using the traditional chinese.. any plans to move to the simplified chinese ??

Re: RC Parents. Let's share.

swan88,

Seems that you did not understand your son's school well enough before joining.  RC has been teaching traditional Chinese all the time, which is also their advantage over ESF schools.  However, due to the future trend of using simplified Chinese, they will gradually teach simplified Chinese in parallel with traditional Chinese.  Personally I prefer schools teaching traditional Chinese in primary and gradually change to simplified Chinese in secondary.

Re: RC Parents. Let's share.

My son is now in P.2. Am I correct that now the CAS (ECA) available to him are only Mandarin Speech and Orchestra ? Both after school ? I signed up for him for the Orchestra, but seems there's nothing happening so far ? While I heard that the Mandarin Speech has started already.

Does any mom know about the Orchestra ? Please share. Thanks.

Re: RC Parents. Let's share.

Hi!  My children are in yr.5 & yr.6.  They are now in Chinese catch-up class.  It's because we moved back Hong Kong this summer from Canada.  Actually,  I concern they learn simplified characters in the class instead of traditional.  It's because I often teach them Chinese with traditional forms.  I don't want them to mix up.  Do you have any parents same situtation?  If yes, what do you think?  Do you have any mum having an opinion in this issue?
