Thank you for sharing. You are planning to apply the international kinder for your baby. So have your baby join any playgroup or pre-nursury before? How old is your baby?

I've never worry about the Chinese as we are living in HK and the family is using Chinese. I just want to provide her with an english environment. But don't know how   except put her in Int'l kinder.

However, I think we can't afford the int'l primary and secondary school, they cost huge . What's your plan for future education?

Hi ptsamm,
My bb is now 11 mths old. I'll enroll for 2 yrs old class in the coming Oct. She is now joining a playgroup in Tin Hau (english speaking) every Friday.
For Chinese, my worry is about writing and reading. Unlike English, it is more difficult to learn to read and write Chinese. So I will only consider bilingual kinder that use only English and Mandarin.
I also plan for local primary school and secondary school so I'll only consider international kinder that teach Chinese.
What is your expectation about your little one? Do you expect her to speak English with native accent? Or you expect her to read and write English with near native standard as well?
Frankly speaking, it is quite easy for very young children to speak English with native accent. (unlike our generation, children nowadays can go to many playgroup/ use a variety of teaching materials to achieve the native accent). However, I think it will be difficult for them to reach native standard (especially vocabularies ) if they didn't go to international school.

The books seems quite good. Will it be any discount for buying the whole set? coz I found some of them like 我愛小妹妹 is not quite suitable for me . Anyway, just want to know, it's too early for me to buy, my girl is only 6 month .

So which Victoria are you going to apply? I'll try the Kornhill. How do you find the current playgroup? Is your baby understand all the instruction in English? are they native speaker?

Yeah, I think Class in English and Mandarin is the best choice. Frankly, I really wish my girl can speak very fluent english and use it as the 1st language. But I won't push too far. Just try to provide a suitable environment for her.

Yes, I'm going to apply Victoria, Kornhill. I hope the teachers there are as good as yours.

So you are going to let Tuenyi continue the education in Victoria Primary. You are kicking out the local school?

I don't think I can afford it.

I've apply for Kornhill playgroup (since I think it is easier to get into the kinder from the playgroup) and will apply for those with mandarin/English class (I can't remember now).
Yes, the playgroup my BB is now going is organized by native English speaker. I find it just in magazine /web?? (I can't remember). Actually it is too difficult to tell how much my bb can understand in the class. However, since my maid talk to her only in English and I usually talk to her in English. My BB understand English better than Cantonese. However, the English my BB understand is not learn from the playgroup. I've 2 friends also took the BB to go to the playgroup, 1 think that it is not good and she not join the playgroup and the other have joined the playgroup. If u are interested I can share some more about the playgroup for your reference. This Sat, I'll take my BB to another playgroup for a trial class.


Unlike you, I don't expect my BB to use English as her 1st language. I expect her to use Cantonese as the 1st language and English + Mandarin as 2nd language. I also expect her oral English and Mandarin have native accent. For this purpose, I've plan to let her to kinder with English and Mandarin ONLY. After that, I hope she will go to primary with native English and Mandarin teachers.

Trial class it sounds attractive. It will be great if the kinders in Taikoo like Victorial, Kornhill Int'l, Baba??, Anna?? have trial class. Then I can try one by one     . But I've never heard it before.

If you and your maid speak english at home, it is very easy to provide an english environment to your bb.

But it is hardly my case, my bb is bringing up by my mum. My indonesia maid speaks (Malaysian mandarin), I used to speak Mandarin with her. But after bb born, my mum comes everyday, I found that her mandarin is     (hong kong mandarin) so I changed the channel back to cantonese. my maid can mostly understand and asked my mum don't speak mandarin anymore. but you know, it's hard to change an elder   .
I don't want my girl learn that from her grand ma

As far as I now, not every Victoria nursey provides E/M class.  This year, only South Horizon(?) , Harbour Heights, Homantin  have E/M class.  It changes every year.

If you do want yr kid to learn E/M, So Chek is another choice.

I've check from their web and know that not every Victoria have E/M PN class I think the competition to get into those class is high!! I'll apply for Harbour Heights+ Homantin class (my bb can take care by my aunt who live in Kln or my 99 who live in HK)

Don't be too worry about the accent since BB can learn to use different accent with different people provided she have great explosure to an language environment. If your BB go to an environment with native English and mandarin speaker, she will pick up very soon

Your BB is very lucky to be taken care by your mum who must really love her. My 99 and mum also go to work

I hope Victorial & Kornhill have trial class too. However, they haven't!! May be because they are kinder.

Ah, another way to let your BB to use native English is recruit someone who speak native English to play with your little girl (like a private tutor). I may do that when she reach 1.5 yr. old. My friend know someone who recruit (post a recruitment in newspaper) a student from international school to play with her BB. May be I'll post a recruitment in hku.
